Reports of the GOP's Demise Are Greatly Exaggerated

Republicans don't need to lurch to the center or become Democrats—they just need a good candidate with an effective message

Republicans need to take a step back, enjoy the holidays, and calmly evaluate where we are. There is no reason to capitulate and renounce our values and principles. It is those conservative values that have helped Republicans get elected to the governor's mansions in 30 of the 50 states after all. And it is from there that the Phoenix candidate will emerge, not from some back room gathering of self-proclaimed smart folks or from some Republican National Committee confab.

The next elections will need hard work, rethinking about the modern electorate and resources. But the silver bullet we all seek is within our grasp. What we need are good candidates with an effective message. The rest will fall in to place.

Corrected on 12/6/12: A previous version of this article incorrectly spelled the name of Sen. Scott Brown.
