Should Employers Be Able to Fire Someone for Being Gay?

Since it is not considered appropriate for employers to sleep with their employees their sexual preferences does not concern them at all.

KJC,

In the year 2012, no intelligent, educated person can make the claim that homosexuality is a choice. Until you abandon this horribly outdated belief, you are never going to be able to grasp these matters.

All your ranting about God is completely irrelevant. We are Americans, one of the primary founding principles of our nation is that we DO NOT allow religion to influence our laws or become intertwined with our government. Why should your views on Jesus influence and control the lives of a Hindu, a Muslim, a Buddhist or an atheist? Religion belongs in your church and your heart...it emphatically DOES NOT belong in our laws, courtrooms, public schools or any other government institutions.

How is who someone loves affecting your business? If you are having problems with someone's actions at work then that is entirely separate from them being homosexual and is already covered by your employee conduct codes

Josh -

If you believe that their actions were completely opposed to the goals of your business - how in good conscience could you not fire them?

I wonder if Rep Lankford thinks businesses should be allowed to discriminate based on religion, as it is "behavior related and preference related".

JKopish of WI 11:28AM May 15, 2012

KJC: I own a business, I know several of my employees are Christian, I am an atheist.

-I disagree 100% with their personal lifestyles.

-I disagree with the way they indoctrinate their children

-I disagree that they terrorize their kids with hell

Can I fire them for being Christian? Is being christian not a choice?

Josh of SD 11:26AM May 15, 2012

Absolutely NOT!

- Should employers be able to fire you if they find out you vote predominately republican?

- Should they be able to fire you if they find out your a Christian?

If we now allow people to fire others simply because of choices about their PERSONAL lives then where does it stop?

Josh of SD 11:21AM May 15, 2012

Eric - I respect your view. I think you correctly express one of the places people divide on this issue. You think sexual orientation is a fixed characteristic. I think it is a choice, up to a point. More than a choice I think it is a moral decision. This brings the subject of God into the picture which of course muddies the waters even more. Give me a little latitude here and try to understand: Since I believe that God is holy and we have rebelled against him (think sin) I recognize that rebelliousness is in our nature. I have a good friend who has an anger issue. He is naturally hot headed. His violence is no more excusable whether it is his nature or his choice.

So the challenge on my end is that my response to Christ who I believe is God, and I truly believe rose from the dead, and I believe paid the penalty for my sin (important points) - my response to his gift is to love Him by trying to obey Him. His word says that homosexuality is a sin - just like the sins I struggle with.

I don't expect people to like this line of thinking. Some (like 'SOME DUDE') are even hostile. I just wonder if they realize how many people (like me) think this way.

For many churches it is unacceptable to allow a person into leadership when they are actively in rebellion to God's word - regardless of the sin. It's not that they expect people not to sin, it's that they must draw a line when people deny that their actions are sinful. It would be the same if someone were committing adultery or promiscuity.

And before I forget this, people with gender identity are the most oppressed in this country.

They commit suicides like there's no tomorrow, no pun intended. 41% of transgender people attempt suicide. That's sad!

If you oppose a bill to stop discrimination against transgender people, you are supporting discrimination against transgender people. They are flesh and blood. If you have no consideration towards their situation, you have a mental disorder. You don't deserve to be among us human beings.

To the people opposing transgender people, I hope your kids and grand kids turn up transgender. Then let's watch them committing suicide because they are bullied and discriminated against and there's no bill to protect them.

Sexual orientation and skin color are both innate. Anybody who argues against this is a moron.

Also, anybody opposing gay marriage is a moron too.

If you oppose gay marriage, we straight people have to get married to gay people in the closet. That means unhappy marriages, infidelity, kids growing up in dysfunctional families, risk of AIDS, etc.

How the F is it helping anyone by preventing gay marriage?

Also, if you permit gay marriage, I as a straight man would love it! Why? Gay dudes are the most handsome, and they will no longer be my competition. Gay women are mostly butch, and they will no longer be in my dating pool. How's that a bad thing.

So you morons, stop the cranky sobbing in your mamma's apron and getting your panties in a bunch over something that is none of your Fing business.

There's no cure for the gay, so just let them go do whatever the hell the want, whoever they want to marry, and love whoever they want.

As far as the sanctity of marriages go, I have sex with your daughters, sisters, and even your wives. I can get them pregnant, but I don't. Sanctity of marriage was a goner long ago. There is no sanctity in straight marriages. At least give the gays a chance.
