Should Mitt Romney Endorse Marco Rubio's Immigration Plan?

The Romney camp tip toes around a GOP version of the controversial DREAM Act

Monday, Mitt Romney's campaign said the former Massachusetts governor would  "study and consider'' Sen. Marco Rubio's immigration plan, labeled as the conservative alternative to the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act, known as the DREAM Act. Rubio's plan does not go as far as the DREAM Act, which would grant illegal immigrants brought over to the United States as children a path to citizenship if they serve in the U.S. military or attend college. Rather, Rubio's plan offers permanent residency, not full citizenship, for illegal immigrants who pass similar criteria.

Rubio, the freshman Florida senator and son of Cuban exiles, has been on the short list for vice presidential nominee even before Romney secured the nomination, which he is now widely believed to have done. Rubio boasts an enviable popularity among conservatives and Latinos alike, and could help Romney gain on Obama's 68 to 23 lead with Hispanic voters. Furthermore, a GOP compromise on the DREAM Act could be just the olive branch Republicans need to reach out to Hispanics on other issues, such as the economy.

However, throughout the primary battle, Romney expressed a tough stance on immigration. He has been critical of the DREAM Act, calling it "amnesty." He has said that "amnesty" programs are a "magnet" which would "encourage more people to come here illegally." He has also argued for the use of "self-deportation" to address illegal immigration and that English be the official language of the United States.

In essence, Shouldnt Senator Rubio (R) Florida, be making more of a statement like, we need to Look at more job creation for the Nation as a whole, instead of concentrating on Obama's Immigration "Dream Act" addendums??? My gosh, who care's if its an Indian we elect...as long as we are able to stand alone without having to rely on Europe's economy or leave our grandchildren with a greater financial burden...I mean isn't that what America is about? We need to concentrate on Bigger More Important issues...trust me no matter what laws are inacted about Immigration we as a Nation were built on that and it will continue whether or not this or that law is passed...I am 1st generation Hispanic, and I really hope most Americans get that Rubio isn't and can't speak for the Various types of Hispanics out here...he might be able to play that in Florida....hmmm..but Hispanic views are vast depending on the region of the country one is from...for example hispanics in Arizona are more affected by border issues, well than a hispanic living in Chicago would be...Rubio..get a clue..NOT all Hispanics "get you" and MOST hispanics right now are worried to keep a job...not whether or not more people can come in..I rest my case...

I don't know if Marco Rubio's plan should be endorsed by any conservative, I haven't read it. I think before anyone decides to endorse the plan or not should READ the proposal first.

Second, I support allowing illegals that have a clean criminal record, enlist in the military and receives an Honorable Discharge (ONLY) to gain their citizenship. After all, anyone that serves their country in the military HONORABLY prove that they have an allegiance to the country. Case in point, there are plenty of Americans that have not nor would they ever serve in the military to support the country. Other than that, there is no other reason to be easy on illegal immigrants.

As a Hispanic, I am greatly disappointed in Mr. Rubio. I considered him a strong conservative voice for the Hispanic community and now must reconsider and take a more in depth look at his political views.

Of course Romney should not endorse Rubio's amnesty scheme, which would be both bad policy and bad politics.

Romney has said since 2008 he would veto the misnamed "Dream Act," and bashed Rick Perry for supporting the Dream Act just a few months ago.

If Romney flip flops on this now, it will turn off a huge part of the base and many independents who oppose amnesty and support enforcement.

Don't forget that a recently released but overlooked Quinnipiac poll shows that on the issue of immigration, Americans support Romney over Obama 42% to 39%.

As Romney has correctly noted in the past, the Dream Act and other amnesties would encourage more illegal immigration.

And as the Associated Press just reported, over half of young American college grads are jobless or underemployed, and any Dream Act would likely amnesty millions of illegal aliens which would further hurt the job prospects of young Americans.

Why on earth are we even talking about any form of amnesty when so many young Americans are suffering and over 20 million Americans are unemployed or underemployed?

Romney should confront Obama's demagogery on this issue head on -- and ask Obama why he is putting politics over the suffering of working class and young jobless Americans.
