That was one of the stupidest political columns I read in years.

And Robert Schlesinger provides the dumbest defense.

Then why does he always sound and look like such a nitwit?

It wouldn't even be a blip on the radar if Obama hadn't been hailed as an orator rivaling the greatest from ancient Greece. So much has been made of his sonorous voice and stirring cadences, but when he's off the prompter, his speech is loaded with "uhs" and stalls. That doesn't make him an idiot, but it means he's no better than anyone else, and worse than many. Romney stutters, but he doesn't pepper his speech with "uhs", and comes across as in better command of his speaking when speaking from notes.

Snake Plissken of NY 6:32AM March 21, 2012

Unfortunately for Mr. Schlesinger, there is ample visual evidence that Obama is unable to speak coherently without his teleprompter.

tenore of NY 6:24AM March 21, 2012

Sorry, Bob, if Obama every expressed a thought that indicated anything like an original thought I could buy in to your premise but he mutilates history, seems to make up facts to bolster a specious argument and even can't name one player on his favorite baseball team, all this tells me he only "knows" what's on the teleprompter.

JohnBissell of MD 5:30AM March 21, 2012

Prompters already set for the answers to questions from reporters are anything but tools. The "O" gets upset when a question comes up that's not on the prompter. The reporter is not invited to future news casts. How ignorant the MSM must think the public is trying to fool people with common sense. Why was a prompter necessary to talk to fifth grade grammar school children? Obamas vocabulary is hardly that of a degreed person and resembles that of someone off the streets. Granted Santorum is using a weak point but stop making excuses for the POTUS, I am tired of the defense for this poor excuse of a leader.

Look, I have an idea. Obama needs to be tested, as to how dependent he is on the teleprompter. Someone needs to try a Ron Burgundy on him. Like; "I'm President Obama?" Or; "Hello, I am Tits McKee!" Or perhaps the old reliable; "Go F--- yourself, America!" Only through such common sense measures, will America be able to finally put President Burgundy to rest.

Nice article. But it cannot save Obama from his sheer inability to speak without an earpiece and texr. He is a moron. And everyone that went to high school with him knows it.

pat of HI 2:10AM March 21, 2012

It is inane to compare using a teleprompter to using a microphone, which provides no assistance with respect to content... In any event, the point is that the teleprompter, unlike cue cards or speaking notes, permits the speaker to read a text verbatim, and to do so while staring straight into the camera as though speaking spontaneously. it certainly creates the appearance of a gifted orator! But the teleprompter does not require the speaker to be as familiar with the content as would someone speaking from notes, as was readily apparent from the times that Obama had issues with his--he was totally lost.
