Swing Voters Need a Champion

'The Swing Vote' author Linda Killian discusses how independents are left out of the electoral system and why they shouldn't be ignored in 2012

What role will swing voters play in the 2012 election?

I think they are up for grabs. A lot of them did vote for Obama in 2008, and a lot of them that I interviewed a year or two later were rather disappointed with what they were getting. Obviously the economy is issue No. 1. It is all about the economy and jobs and how people feel about their own situation, and that is going to be absolutely the biggest issue in this campaign.

What do the media not understand about swing voters?

I think what the media misses is that there is this core group in the center that is in agreement on a great many things. And they want movement forward, they want solutions. I don't think the media is focusing at all on that group and their concerns.

You are certainly right, particularly about the young voters, Mr. Sneed.

My daughter, and her husband, along with my one year old grandson, have been living with us for over a year now.

Daughter and hubby are continuing to further their education at college and they wonder if they will be able find any kind of job after they graduate, even to pay back their student loans! They used to be a "Starbuck's mom and dad", but they can't afford that anymore.

Both voted for Mr. Obama in 2008, but today, they are shaking their heads and asking, "What have I done"?

i can only imagine that this is happening all over the country.
