On his show Comedy Central The Colbert Report, comedian Stephen Colbert announced Thursday night that he would be exploring a GOP 2012 presidential run in his home state of South Carolina. In doing so, he signed off control of his Super-PAC to fellow Comedy Central star Jon Stewart, host of the Daily Show, where Colbert got his start. Colbert has received much attention, including a New York Times Sunday Magazine feature, for his "Colbert Super-PAC" (under Stewart renamed "The Definitely Not Coordinating with Stephen Colbert Super-PAC") which many see as a satire on the ridiculousness of current campaign finance laws. On the show, Colbert said he was forming, "an exploratory committee to lay the groundwork for my possible candidacy for the president of the United States of South Carolina," where he is already polling at 5 percent, putting him ahead of former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman. If Colbert does decide to run, he will face a challenge with the January 21 primary, as he missed South Carolina’s filing deadline, and the state does not allow write-ins.
