Was the Red Sox Collapse the Greatest of All Time?

A big-name team fails to make it to postseason

September 29, 2011 RSS Feed Print

With the third highest payroll in the league, 162 games ago the Boston Red Sox were an easy pick for postseason success. Yet, their final inning in Wednesday's game against the Orioles—their final game in MLB's regular season—was a summarizing exclamation point to a horrifying collapse. The Sox lost 20 out of their last 27 games. Ill-timed injuries, shoddy pitching, and disappointing performances were all to blame for the Boston team's breakdown. Wednesday's game ended with the Sox failing to catch a Baltimore hit; it also ended any hope the Sox had of a postseason comeback. To add insult to injury, the Orioles were the last place team in their division. The Atlanta Braves also suffered a similar collapse—but many commentators are calling Boston's collapse the worst ever. Even left fielder Carl Crawford couldn't defend his team, "We'll go down in history as one of the worst collapses in history, so it definitely doesn't feel good to be part of that."
