This article is most deffinnetly helpful but i think the concern should be more on making higher standards instead of lowing them just so some kids can understand

If you have a student and can't wait for policy reform, find one of the many Math Circles that are popping up around the country.

http://www.mathcircles.org

Math Circles are generally headed by accomplished mathematicians who introduce high school and younger students to discrete math topics and various career opportunities. A very good example of a Math Circle in the Dallas area is:

some educational games could help with quicker math learning, like http://mathiqgames.com much better then typical games kids play nowardays

I agree.

Except replace "government" with "family".

forget about it. With the the cult of stupidity's two-prong attack on education and science don't count on America returning to forefront of science and math any time soon. Their raison d'etre is the denial of reason and truth. Everything they do is designed to destroy public schools and to belittle teachers. I don't think that is a good recipe for promoting good Math and Science education. Look at how that farce called the House of Representatives is attacking the EPA and the Education department and the Consumer Protection Agency. The cult of stupidity isn't going to do anything to help improve education.

What a laugh to hear praise for "a highly educated and skilled labor force" from someone who runs a Opinion page with so a heavy anti-education and anti-labor agenda. Quit mocking us, please.

Yes, this country needs to have an educated, skilled and well compensated work force to compete internationally. That means investing in education heavily like China and India are doing. States in India are giving every child a laptop, and students in India and China can get a college education expensively, maybe a couple thousand dollars for a degree as opposed to Americans having to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars. College debt has become one of the leading causes of bankruptcies in the US. Once California offered free college education at one time and it resulted in the success of Silicon Valley - no coincidence. The current conservative push for austerity directly conflicts with creating a educated and skilled workforce in the US for any good economic future. We have to invest in America to promote education. Offering free university education to our kids would pay back the investment ten-fold and ensure our country's future competitiveness.

So the token support for your self-promoting STEM is almost insulting as long as you continue to support such right-wing gobbledegook here. Pandering to greedy hatemongers is a bad idea anyway, and will never help educate this country.

I agree whole-heartedly with MZ's column. This written comment was preceded by those from Rich, Madprof, Luther, and Booker Randy Mathis, who disagreed. Only the latter was on-subject and presented some pertinent facts.

To all naysayers: imagine America without its long history of vanguard achievements in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This country would be unrecognizable - primitive, and we'd all be speaking German and studying the history of one of our founding fathers, Adolf Hitler.

The government has been pushing STEM for quite a while now and it hasn't produced the desired results. The kids are often ignorant of history, barely literate and clueless about how government operates. Their problem solving skills are questionable at best. Maybe we should help them walk before telling them to run?

Rich of CO 12:55AM September 28, 2011

Before we can make the STEM produce the desired outputs, we need to make sure that the ROOTS are healthy. That to me is the real problem. All too many of the potential US students come from homes where the roots have already atrophied, due to the behavior of our nanny government. And now I assume you are talking about 'investments' in our schools coming from the federal government when they should be from the private sector.

Yes, the federal government did a fine job creating NASA and that led to many innovations, but we live in different times, and more government 'investment' just breeds more people who want to live off the government's largess.

It is also interesting to note the opposition to charter schools coming from teachers' unions.

I have degrees in the subjects you are pushing here and have those subjects, and the only students who did well were those with sturdy roots.

Mort, I have enjoyed reading your last few blogs and thought you were becoming more realistic than when you voted for Obama, but I must say your performance on Larry Kudlow's show a couple of weeks ago was a disaster.

Massive Tedian immigration of low quality third world techs has made engineering and science unattractive careers.
