Jimmy Carter: President Obama Leaves Too Much to Congress

Carter is the Man!

Much to my regret, I didn't vote for him for his second term. I think things Edward Kennedy said about Carter had something to do with that.

Carter is absolutely, positively right! Obama needs to get his rear-end moving. The ball is in his court. The country is burning down. Obama needs to forge a comprehensive plan to get the economy going, and then start implementing it, whether Congress agrees or not.

Congress probably won't agree, and Obama will get a lot of lawsuits to try to stop him (but all these lawsuits take years to adjudicate, allowing plenty of time for settlement).

Meanwhile, Obama can start the economy rolling, which he needs to do in this time of Congressional logjam. Carter is right: the ball is in Obama's court.

Louis Mitchell Jr. of CA_ Says 1. "He was elected by a majority of the people "

True. Times are a changing. Proof, Nov.2, 2010.

2. "voting for the party that has them paying lower taxes than their secretaries"

Tell Buffet to pay taxes:

"Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Owes Taxes Going Back To 2002 "

"A little over two weeks ago, Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett, the third-richest person in the world, penned an op-ed critical of the low tax rates for the superrich. It would seem his own company hasn't prioritized paying its rightful share in a timely fashion either."

"Berkshire Hathaway, the eighth-largest public company in the world according to Forbes, openly admits to still owing taxes for years 2002 through 2004 and 2005 through 2009, according to the New York Post. The company says it expects to "resolve all adjustments proposed by the US Internal Revenue Service" within the next year."

About lower taxes for rich:

“According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the Bush tax cuts actually shifted the total tax burden farther toward the rich so that in 2000-2004, total income tax paid by the top 40% of income-earners grew by 4.6% to 99.1% of the total.”

_____

“The Kennedy tax cuts”

President Hoover dramatically increased tax rates in the 1930s and President Roosevelt compounded the damage by pushing marginal tax rates to more than 90 percent. Recognizing that high tax rates were hindering the economy, President Kennedy proposed across-the-board tax rate reductions that reduced the top tax rate from more than 90 percent down to 70 percent. What happened? Tax revenues climbed from $94 billion in 1961 to $153 billion in 1968, an increase of 62 percent (33 percent after adjusting for inflation)."

_____

“The Reagan tax cuts”

“Thanks to "bracket creep," the inflation of the 1970s pushed millions of taxpayers into higher tax brackets even though their inflation-adjusted incomes were not rising. To help offset this tax increase and also to improve incentives to work, save, and invest, President Reagan proposed sweeping tax rate reductions during the 1980s. What happened? Total tax revenues climbed by 99.4 percent during the 1980s, and the results are even more impressive when looking at what happened to personal income tax revenues. Once the economy received an unambiguous tax cut in January 1983, income tax revenues climbed dramatically, increasing by more than 54 percent by 1989 (28 percent after adjusting for inflation)."

_____

"The 1993 Clinton Tax Increase Did Not Lead to the Budget Surpluses of the Late 1990s"

"Since the Clinton Administration’s own numbers reveal that the 1993 tax increase was a failure, we have to find a different reason to explain why the budget shifted to surplus in the late 1990s."

"Fortunately, there’s no need for an exhaustive investigation. The Historical Tables on OMB’s website reveal that good budget numbers were the result of genuine fiscal restraint. Total government spending increased by an average of just 2.9 percent over a four-year period in the mid-1990s. This is the reason why projections of $200 billion-plus deficits turned into the reality of big budget surpluses."

"Republicans say the credit belongs to the GOP Congress that took charge in early 1995. Democrats say it was because of Bill Clinton. But all that really matters is that the burden of federal spending grew very slowly. Not only was there spending restraint, but Congress and the White House agreed on a fairly substantial tax cut in 1997."

"To sum things up, it turns out that spending restraint and lower taxes are a recipe for good fiscal policy. This second chart (click to enlarge) modifies the first chart, showing actual deficits under this small-government approach compared to the OMB and CBO forecasts of what would have happened under Clinton’s tax-and-spend baseline."

3. "But as Rick Perry calls for the complete dismantling of the Social Security "Ponzi scheme", or GW Bush called for turning it over to wall street ala 401 k ( now there is your corporate kiss A** ) "

Why do you LIE. Perry never said "complete dismantling of the Social Security":

Is "Ponzi scheme" according to LIBERAL Chris :

NEVER IN MY WILDEST DREAM DID I THINK I WOULD QUOTE AND PROVIDE VIDEO BY Chris Mattews:

"Are establishment liberals and the mainstream media finally, albeit painfully slowly, coming around to the common-sense fact that Social Security is an unsustainable fiction bankrupting our nation? While many liberals are still holding out, MSNBC's Chris Matthews, at least, has broken ranks from the Social Security Deniers. They say that just understanding that you have a problem is the first step on the road to recovery. (h/t the DC)"

"Liberals seem to take umbrage with the term "Ponzi scheme" because it's "pejorative," "aggressive," and implies a criminal endeavor. But if you're admitting that the structure of Social Security operates in the same way as a Ponzi scheme, here's an exit question: Why is it legal for the federal government to coerce citizens into a massive-scale program that would make an ordinary individual a criminal? Is it because the government is made up of enlightened, all-knowing individuals with only the most noble of intentions? Hmmmm."

Dave Beall of OH - It's really sad that "Americans"? like you continue to allow your personal Bias and Racism and or Ignorance enable the Republican party and the wealthiest in this country to loot America.

In your comments you indicate the president doesn't represent the people ? Really

He was elected by a majority of the people .. So when you say he doesn't it's code for he's not "my boss" Oh no ... and doesn't deserve the respect of the office. What's so sad about this thinking is that for decades the white community has asked minorities to "pull themselves" up by their bootstraps. Yet day after day the white community down plays and attempts to belittlea bi- racial President who has done just that.

President of The United States

Once Married Father and Husband

It Harkins back to the Pullman coach era of American Jim Crow where a Black man who was licensed to practice law was thought to be "beneath" the lowest pig farmer as long as the farmer was white. Heaven forbid the pig farmer feel inadequate ... That's you Dave Beall of OH you are that ignorant Pig farmer and I hope your Karma comes back to you 10 fold. You say the president lied to get into office ??? and is a corporate tool? Really

Where have I heard that he "lies" phrase before oh of course Joe Wilson ... Republicans ride your bigotry like a surf board.. Getting people like you to vote against their and their families own interests time and time again ... Gay Marriage has been used .. immigration .. Abortion ..now race. Yet somehow when they controled all the branches of legislature they never seem to pass legislation on those issues ... Don't people like you Dave Beall of OH ever get tired of being the rich mans lackey, can't you see them laughing at a man in Ohio one of the states hardest hit by the recession in the country

voting for the party that has them paying lower taxes than their secretaries? All the while cutting the services that are vital to said lackey ... You know like Social Security .. I'm not talking about "means" testing which actually makes since

But as Rick Perry calls for the complete dismantling of the Social Security "Ponzi scheme", or GW Bush called for turning it over to wall street ala 401 k ( now there is your corporate kiss A** )

When the truth is it could be solvent today if the tax was collected on more than the first 108,000 dollars of reported income. Get it Dave Beall of OH if you make 108 k a year all of it is subject to social security withholding .. But if you make more than that only the 108,000 is subject. Sounds like those making more than 108k are paying less of their income as a percentage to social security than those making 108 k or less sound fair to you?I could go on and on but to what point WHICH IS MY POINT NO AMOUNT OF REASON CAN REACH PEOPLE LIKE YOU Dave Beall of OH - Because of your personal Bias and Racism and or Ignorance

Carter must be very happy with Obama, now that Obama is considered the least effective president w/ Carter pushed into second place!

Why is this old senile failure of a president and someone who borders on traitor even asked what he thinks really WHO CARES!

sally Cartwright of NY 1:40PM September 19, 2011

Jimmy Carter is a slithering deceptive and treasonous reptile if ever there was one. He may be the worst president we ever had, even worse than what we have now, as incredible as that seems. I don't think the people of the Middle East are as gullible and ignorant of this “low life” as the liberals here would like to think. The people of Egypt, Libya, Algeria, and other peoples of other countries don’t need “Jimmy Carter the Great Divider” for anything. They are beyond that and they will do better without him being a part of their historical awakening.

"I would like to see President Obama forge a comprehensive proposal that would bring our expenditures down but also increase revenue and therefore get our deficit under control".

While he's at it, he should find a cure for cancer and the common cold.

It is this kind of pompous pontificating ["there he goes again"] which cost Mr. Carter a second term. Like all respectable politicians, when defeated, he should retire, keep quiet, and do good things.

Gabriel Austin of NM 1:03PM September 19, 2011

"Holy-Spend-Some-More", Batman!!

Jimmy Carter, the second worst POTUS in the history of our country even said it twice, ".....but also increase revenue."

Raising taxes during a Recession/Depression has NEVER been the answer

It is w/o wonder the Dems numbers are continuing their "disappearing act"!
