its ridiculous, Orlando is nothing but housing projects, abandoned buildings, drug dealers and murders. It used to be nice, but the City of Orlando is just too ghetto

In my opinion in general Florida has the highest crime rate. It's very diverse population has something to do with it. Lots of people coming from different parts of the country migrated in Florida by boat or swim across the border which most of them has no legal papers for them be allowed to work in the state and that motivates them to sell drugs, rob stores & houses, and killed innocent citizens for them to survive. I am fond of watching news and i noticed the crimes happening here in Florida is just horrendous. Over 200 cases in Miami was never solved. I am very surprised Detroit has the highest ratings, i lived in Michigan for 15 years and i felt safer there, the people are nicer and polite compared to very RUDE drivers and very rude, unfriendly people in Florida. The only thing i can say about Florida is the nice weather and better economy...

I've lived in Orlando for 13 years now and I'm counting the days until I can get out of here. This city is filled with gang bangers, and low class trash (just drive down Orange Blossom Trail and you'll get an eyeful of gang graffiti and drugged out hookers looking for a good time).

I absolutely adore Disney, and I always feel safe when I'm on Disney property. However, when I step back into the reality of Orlando, I want to run screaming in the other direction. Keep your car doors locked and your valuables out of sight when you're down here.

Having worked and lived in and around Atlanta for 30 years I can tell you that crime is rampant and rarely solved. The police Dept. is a pure patronage and corruption operation where blatant cases of malfeasance are rarely punished. In cases where arrests are made the criminals are released from the jail before the paperwork is complete. The DA's office and courts routinely dismiss cases involving violence as if they were handling littering violations. There is an ongoing coziness between the Chamber of Commerce and the politicians to paint a different picture but the facts say otherwise.

AS a 30 year resident of Central Florida it doesn't surprise me of Orlando's high ranking for crime. Of course, keep in mind that almost everyone here is from someplace else, like Camden N.J., NYC, New Orleans and San Juan, particularly in Kissimmee. The economy is characterized by low-paying jobs, transient construction workers and scammers preying on the elderly. Welcome to our Magic Kingdom!

I grew up 10 miles outside of Camden NJ (Phila. Metro), Moved to Denver & Now live in the Orlando Metro Area (Kissimmee). I have lived here since Nov. 2010. I have to say this is the worst area I have lived in. I was never approached on the streets of Camden or Philly in 30 yrs- Never approached in Denver or Aurora in 10 yrs. I now have to really watch whats going on in the parking lots- including grocery store parking lots. My husband was approached from behind tonight for change outside of dunkin donuts in kissimmee. My husband is a cancer patient & is a bit frail looking at this point, the guy was persistant, getting closer to my husband & when he saw me he backed off B/C I saw his face. This is the 5th time we have been approached in 4 MONTHS- If you are visiting the Orlando area- stick to the tourist areas they are the safest, dont wander unless your going to the beach via freeways- we cant wait to move (8 mos, 1 week)

I hate it here of FL 1:55AM February 19, 2011

Sources associated with the article stated that the area described as “Orlando” is the “Census Designated Area". Census Designated Area (based on the Census Bureau guidelines) comprises a densely settled concentration of population that is not within an incorporated place. The research areas described in this article includes four counties (Lake, Orange, Osceola, and Seminole). This area being described has a population of 2,082,421 people with over 4000 square miles of space. The City of Orlando has a population of 235,860 people and is 110 square miles of space. This information should be included in future stories to give the reader a more accurate picture of how large the census designated area is, and that reported crime in this large area is not indicative of crime within any particular city.

The theory is flawed thinking this is race. If so, Birmingham with the lowest population and highest concentration of black population at 73.46% would be number 1. Orlando would not even make the list with a high population and only 26.3% black. Cities like Minneapolis, Kansas City and Saint Louis would not even make the list as their black/white population is nearly the same, with very different populations. I live in Saint Louis, and feel safer here than I ever did living in San Diego or Ann Arbor Michigan, where my car was stolen and apartment was broken into twice(and not in a bad part of town). There are bad black people, there are bad white people. Not all people seeking government assistance are criminals. In fact, in Missouri if convicted of certain crimes, you may not receive any public assistance. I say grow up to all those that think that, and have an expresso at Starbucks.....in the suburbs of Saint Louis where the population is 99% white.

Actually, by far the least safe I have ever felt was in Chicago. I am from a medium sized city in the northeast and travel all over. I would have thought Chicago would have been way up at the top but I don't think its police dept releases statistics, do they? I would caution anyone going there to be extremely careful, one wrong turn and you can be in a serious situation without even realizing it. My experience occurred in January; stayed downtown, and was mugged right downtown in the daytime. I was told it was common. Hearing from more and more of the people here the same thing about their experiences in that city. My colleague went there and his wife was mugged just off Michigan Avenue.
