Illegal Immigration Stabilizes After a Two-Year Drop

February 8, 2011 RSS Feed Print

Illegal immigrants made up 3.7 percent of the U.S. population and 5.2 percent of the nation's workforce in 2010, according to Pew's Hispanic Center. Pew's study also indicates that births to immigrants in the country without permission account for about 8 percent of total births in the United States. But the overall number of illegal immigrants in the United States may be meandering slowly downward. The estimated number of illegal immigrants saw a two-year drop to 11.1 million from its 2007 peak at an estimated 12 million, followed by a slight bump up to 11.2 million in 2010. According to Pew, this number is still more than triple what it was in 20 years ago in 1990, when the estimated illegal population was 3.5 million. Meanwhile, the nation continues to wait for politicians in Washington to affect meaningful nationwide immigration reform, and several states, including Oklahoma, Virginia, Texas, and Colorado, are following Arizona's lead in pursuing anti-illegal immigration legislation.

Illegal immigration is a crime. Illegal immigrants are criminals.

Why should the average American who is here by parents or grandparents that came here LEGALLY have to pay for those who dont. Its an injustice to the people who tr to benefit our nation. Of course im not implying that all immigrants are doing this, yet there are shockingly high numbers of those who do.

The topic Immigration is something that is very close to my heart. My father arrived in the U.S. at the age of 12. He worked his ass off to make sure his parents in Mexico had everything they needed. Once he married my mother and began having children with her, he did his hardest to make sure she had everything as well. When my father was an illegal immigrant in the U.S. he would go to Mexico every chance he got. I believe that this topic is so close to me because of him. Every time he would have to come back he was nearly killed. Many say that racism is something in the past, but I beg to differ. RACISM exists, and I have to admit I was one of them before. (Against whites) However, I have learned that everyone is equal and no matter what everyone is important to the world. People say that nobody from Mexico should be allowed to live here in the U.S., but you know in reality without us the U.S. wouldn’t be the same! I have seen that Mexicans are much harder workers than other races, and we are what provide the economy more money. I have some comments for the previous who have commented this article.

@Another immigration travesty: NOONE cares about your facts. So just be quiet because if it wasn’t for Mexicans the economy would be worse!

@MomTaxpayerCitizen: I really wish I could see you face to face so I could give you a piece of my mind. Not only do believe that you are w white racist lady, but I also believe that you have no heart. You have no idea what it feels like to live in a world where people discriminate you on were you’re from. Honestly if you think us Mexicans don’t pay taxes you must be really STUPID learn your facts before you OPEN your mouth!!! One person like you is too many in the world!!!!!!!!

@LATINO: I can say that you are my new best friend! I completely agree with your comment, people just can’t understand how it feels to live in this world. It’s not as easy as it seems!

@my opinion: you also are my new best friend, the world needs to have more people like you!

I can be a nice girl, but this topic gets me really heated up, and MomTaxpayerCitizen is really dumb and actually made me want to see her in person (which I recommend not happen!) no one knows how it feels to live in a world like this except for us. It’s people like you (MomTaxpayerCitizen) that make me feel like killing myself sometimes. I sorry to say this, but sometimes I wish I wasn’t born in the U.S. My parents are permanent residents of the U.S. but I really hate this damn country!!!! People come from different countries to provide for their families, they say it’s supposed to be the AMERICAN DREAM, but in my eyes that’s all BS!!!
