Jan. 30, 1948 Mahatma Gandhi is assassinated at age 78 in New Delhi on his way to a prayer meeting.

Jan. 31, 1865 The House passes the 13th Amendment, making slavery illegal. It's ratified in December.

Feb. 6, 1911 Ronald Reagan is born in Tampico, Ill.
