A look back at the week in history

Oct. 31, 1941 Mount Rushmore is completed after 14 years of carving in South Dakota.

Nov. 1, 1800 John Adams becomes the first resident of what will become the White House.

Nov. 2, 1983 Martin Luther King Jr.’s January birthday is designated a national holiday.

Nov. 4, 1924 In Wyoming, Nellie Tayloe Ross is elected the nation’s first female governor.

Nov. 5, 1872 Susan B. Anthony votes in the presidential election, 48 years before women gain suffrage. She is later arrested and fined $100, which she refuses to pay.
