Is Lifting the Gulf Coast Oil Drilling Moratorium a Good Idea?

Citing improvements in safety standards and regulations, the moratorium on deep water drilling in the Gulf of Mexico has been lifted, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said today. Drillers will be required to meet "the higher bar we have set," Salazar said, including written certifications by oil company executives that they have met all the safety rules. The thinking behind the new rules is that they would prevent another disastrous oil spill, but critics are displeased with the decision for various reasons: Some call the regulations "too onerous"; others say deep water drilling remains too risky and dangerous. The six-month moratorium was first put in place by President Obama during the wake of the BP oil spill, and was supposed to end on November 30.  [Read the U.S. News op-ed debate on whether offshore oil drilling should be expanded.]

It'd be one thing is Americans were getting part of the profits from our resources. Other than the cheap roughneck labor to drill and the politicians getting bought off by the oil companies, none of the enormous profits are staying in the country.

Deregulation doesn't work on Wall Street and it doesn't work with government handouts to oil companies to trash our waters, land and rivers for the profits of some foreign companies who don't give a rats ace about Americans except how much they can raise the price of gas and how long they can keep us addicted to their profiteering.

Bush started giving away money to oil companies so they could ravage the Gulf Coast unmolested by regs with a green light that no regulations will be enforced and Oil companies won't pay any taxes on their profits off American oil. Fine freikn mess that turned out to be as Bush Bled our deficit into the trillions.

The tired excuse of the shifty transient boom-bust economics of the oil patch always leaves the locals broke with a big mess on their hands, while the greedy forgein oil companies are long gone. Ask anyone affected by the Oil Spill in Gulf Coast how that working out for them, especially now that the media forgot all about them to cover airhead teabaggers trying to sell off the country to the highest bidder.

To the 94% who voted that the ban on drilling in the Gulf should not be lifted, where do you plan to get the oil and gas that power your cars, homes and the jobs where you work? The oil and gas has to come from somewhere. if you think the ban should stay in place, you should change your lifestyle to one that uses no hydrocarbons. Good luck with that.

There is absolutely no chance for economic recovery until industry can operate in the United States profitably. Onerous anti-industry, environmental regulations have crippled our country. It seems that the only thing that may stop the Environmentalists is an all out revolt against their dogma - brought about by empty bellies and wallets.
