Rep. Franks: Administration Is Lying About the Arizona Immigration Law

Just because this is an "OP/ED" piece does not mean that opinions can be represented as if they were facts. In fact, I would say that especially in the case of a State Representative there is still a responsibility to have one's opinions based on facts, rather than personal dislike. When he uses that title, "Rep. Franks", he is not one person, but rather an agent of his state, representing "all" of his constituents.

Now maybe you should not drink so much coffee and stick to your own opinion about his opinion, not mine. Like you said, this is the "OPINION" section. My opinion is as valid as yours or his. Now take your hypocritical foot out of your mouth.

How can I take your publication seriously when you print crap like this? For example, let's turn the tables and use Franks' words against himself:

"Trent Franks makes intentional misrepresentations of the law."

"Trent Franks' office exists to enforce the law, not to subvert it or apply only what he finds agreeable."

"Trent Franks' motivations have everything to do with political posturing and blind dedication to a dangerously misguided ideology and little to do with defending the U.S. Constitution."

"Even more bewildering is the Congressman's willingness to deliberately incite a false racial division in America, in a desperate attempt to strengthen his popularity among his increasingly skeptical, ever-dwindling base."

"Congressman Franks is wildly out of touch with Americans' concerns."

Sounds a bit crazy doesn't it? So why did you print it when he slanders the President with these same words?

I'd say US News is a bit crazy.

In a decision that could lay the groundwork for an Arizona-style immigration policy, Virginia's attorney general said state law enforcement officers are allowed to check the immigration status of anyone "stopped or arrested."

Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli issued the legal opinion Friday extending that authority to Virginia police in response to an inquiry over whether his state could mirror the policies passed into law in Arizona.

"It is my opinion that Virginia law enforcement officers, including conservation officers may, like Arizona police officers, inquire into the immigration status of persons stopped or arrested," he wrote.

The decision comes after a federal judge blocked Arizona from implementing its provision that would require law enforcement to check the immigration status of anyone they stop and suspect of being an illegal immigrant.

Cuccinelli's ruling could justify that kind of policy in Virginia. However, Cuccinelli reiterated in the opinion a prior finding that while state officers have the authority to arrest suspects on criminal immigration violations, they are advised against arresting over civil immigration violations. Overstaying a visa would fall under the latter category.

It's sad that Arizona felt the need to pass this law. The Federal Laws are more sweeping and should be more than adequate. They are simply not being enforced. At least Arizona can still imprison employers that knowingly hire illegal aliens. This is the best tool we can use to solve the problem.

As far as the striking down of the Arizona Law goes, we haven't heard the end of it. Just wait until November.

Scott of AZ has it right. There is another motive and that is the pandering of the politicians to the people sending money from this country to help get relatives over here legally or not. Those voters’ numbers are huge and the politicians are pandering to get that vote. The illegals and their sponsors have the politicians on the run and some of them are in the congress and senate. All the illegal would like to eliminate the U. S boarders and be free to wander across the boarder at will. That would be fine but then the President of Mexico could list us as illegals, fire all our politicians and become a territory of Mexico! Something Santa Anna couldn’t do!

All our comments and grumbling will do no good until we clean house - White house and rid it of the scum that is determined to put an end to the longest running empire in history.

Illegal immigration is illegal right? So what's the big deal? If people don't agree with the federal law being upheld, then they should change it. Until then, I guess we have to follow the law right? Guess what happens if I enter another country illegally? I get thrown in jail, deported, etc... I gladly abide by other country's rules, so why can't people of other nations do the same in the US? When an illegal alien uses public services, chances are they do not pay the same taxes I do that support those services. Let's make a deal then. Change the immigration laws. Free up immigration so it's easy to make it in to the country, but if you have no legal documentation that you are legal and paying taxes, then you do not get to benefit from our public services. Sound good? As far as 'Anchor Babies'... Go to most other countries, have a kid there on vacation and see if they get their citizenship. Not gonna happen. With Immigration Reform, should come public service and benefit reform as well... Change the law the right way and earn your citizenship the right way. Until then, don't break the law, and don't be mad at states that don't want to go bankrupt like California.

... and Obama tops the list!

There is simply no good reason NOT to implement this law!

WHAT are you people afraid of?? WHAT are you hiding?? WHY is it so difficult to do the right thing?? Illegal family members hiding, I'm sure, es primero uno, SI?

Brewer just wants to prolong her position as Arizona Governor taking advantage of the US economic recession using the tactics of Adolf Hitler by demonizing immigrants as political tool the same way the Nazi party got into power during Germany’s economic recession by demonizing the Jews engaging everybody else into a feel-good predatory rage. Now fuehrer Brewer has become more popular than ever playing the xenophobic card. If anybody disagrees with the Nazi comparisons just check out the new Gestapo headquarters in Arizona set by a publically self-proclaimed “proud KKK member” sheriff Joe Arpaio and his concentration camps and compare that to holocaust records.
