Members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People have passed a resolution that condemns what they feel is racism in the Tea Party movement. "We take no issue with the Tea Party," Ben Jealous, NAACP president and CEO said in a statement. "We take issue with the Tea Party's continued tolerance for bigotry and bigoted statements." The NAACP also claims that Tea Party activists have engaged in racist behavior by waving signs that degrade African Americans and President Obama specifically. Tea Partyers have denounced the NAACP's action as unfounded and unfair, and Sarah Palin called the charge "false and appalling." Thomas Jefferson Street blogger Peter Roff agrees, and says the NAACP is using the same kind of cheap broad brush tactics that figures like Bull Connor used during the 1960s.
What do you think? Is the Tea Party racist? Or does the NAACP's charge misconstrue the group's real message? Take our poll and post your thoughts below.
