Should Republicans Take Control of Congress?

You won't see any right-wingers trying to privatize social security, trying to impeach the president claiming he isn't a citizen, or getting rid of the Department of Education while Obama has the veto and the Senate has the filibuster. The Democrats should play by the new rules of the Congress and block all Republican legislation.

What has this administration done to personally raise your taxes?

Obama's policies and bills have raised my individual taxes! I drive my personal vehicle for my job and am able to deduct my mileage. Obama reduced the amount per mile that is allowed from .58 to .50 On average that costs me approx 100/month. Also the new health care bill will no longer allow (starting in 2011) using my pre-tax flexible spending plan money to buy over the counter medications. Both of these mean I pay more tax to the federal gov't.

So don't say he has not affected individual taxes because that is wrong!

"Taxed beyond all reason" An interesting and totally inaccurate quote. Taxes at the federal level are lower now than in the 1950s when the top income tax bracket paid 90%. Now the top bracket pays 39.6%. If you think that "the people" can't fund the spending increases through tax increases you are sorely mistaken. The taxed beyond all reason ideology is just part of the fabrication to get people to forget that rich people used to be taxed at a much higher rate than they are now. When the government taxed the rich at that percentage we as a nation were able to build an entire nationwide network of roads and bridges; we built hospitals and schools and railroads. We progressed as a nation. Now because of this perversion of the American dream money is an end to itself and not a means to build something better for both individual citizens and society as a whole.

What has this administration done to personally raise your taxes? The answer so far has been nothing. The three major bills and several minor bills have not increased the tax rates for those making less than $250,000. In fact the administration is fighting hard to keep the Bush tax cuts in place for those who fall within that tax bracket. In its thankless effort, this administration has stimulated a shrinking economy that was rapidly losing jobs and consistently has either created jobs or kept unemployment steady. In its thankless effort, this administration has taken on major industries on behalf of the American public to correct the inefficiencies of the private sectors in health care and Wall Street. It has created new safeguards for private consumers and borrowers. It has done all this and yet we are not grateful because the economy has been sluggish for three months? The government doesn't have a magic wand that it can wave and say poof here's more jobs. Private industry has to be involved to actually hire new workers. In its two years the administration have moved mountains that were placed there by the previous administration. It's conducted two wars it inherited and successfully is shutting one of them down. They responded to one of the greatest environmental disasters of all time and held the corporation responsible accountable. And oh yeah they saved the financial system from collapse.

At this point I would ask what more do you want? But I know the answer is we want unemployment down. If the only thing one has against this administration is that they haven't created enough jobs in the last three months to match their projections/hopes then one should still vote Democratic in this year's mid term elections. What's the alternative: Republicans cutting taxes further; driving deficits higher? Before you fully decide on who to vote for in the mid term elections I would ask you to look at the total breadth of the work that this administration has done in two short years and ask yourself if a sluggish economy is better than a return to the policies which created these crises.

Im an independant but conservative thinking I agree with almost everything you;ve said except.

What difference does it make DEm. Or Rep. Both ideoligies do not bend in a way to function adherintly to the needs of the country. Yes Rep took us from a surplus to a Deficit but the Dems have increased three fold in 18 months. Its easy to blame the rep. but rember the Dem. had Congress since 2006.

The continual spending must stop Ideoligy must take a backseat. If talk about spending wrecklessly why have we issued by Congress over 800 billion in stimulous funds. of which over half is unused but the Adinistration wont use it to finance the Unemployed using Emergency as a reason.

This Administration must take a look at its own projected deficits which it continues to grow without hesitation. Neither party is imune to the special interests and until term limits, and ethics are brought to the forefront and those abusing, and working unethicaly are dismissed. Thier can be no good outcome in congress.

A Republican takeover of Congress would be a huge setback. That would be like liberal Democrats from the 60s and 70s retaking Congress. Republican Conservatives are beating a drum that the public does not want to hear any more than that of Liberals. Both are way out of step with the American people.

We need Democrats to retain Control of Congress-but with a more pragmatic agenda similar to Bill Clinton and like-minded Democrats in the 1990s. We need to look at jobs-how can we reduce the tax burden on business so that more jobs can be created? How can we encourage the growth of emerging technologies that will create a truly 21st century economy? How can we invest in education to encourage creativity in our children? As a teacher, this is very important to me.

Such an emphasis might also solve our foreign policy problems as well. If you look at the nations causing the most problems in the world today-Iran-North Korea-Somalia-etc, they are on the outside of a global economy that is creating vast wealth in developing nations such as India and China. How can we bring these rouge nations into the fold? It was entrepreneurship that helped bring down communism in the 1980s and it can do the same for these nations if we take the right steps.

Many Conservatives often hearken back to Ronald Reagan and feel that if we did the same things in the early 80s today our problems would be solved.

As a Democrat who voted twice for Reagan, I believe that he probably would not do much or all of what he did then if he were President today.

Like John Kennedy and Bill Clinton- Reagan was a pragmatic leader who was more interested in getting things done than in pursuing an ideology of the left or right. He also could read the American people and their sentiments. I am disappointed that our current President as well as his Republican opponents cannot do this.

The administration is placing the economy in a position that will require years for recovery - spending in one year has exploded and the people are unable to fund it with additional taxes. We are already taxed beyond all reason.

While the republicans forgot their power base, it is amazing that they are criticized by supporters of the current administration about their spending. Obama has refined deficit spending into an art form - unmatched by any other administration in history.

Unless our economic policy is radically changed and tax relief enacted quickly, we will see another depression of such magnitude our current environment will be enviable.

If we don't oust the current Congressional overlords, it won't matter any more. Open your eyes. Read and study. Go overseas for supplementary information if you have to. Understand that Washington's bubble and media filter is designed to keep you ignorant, underemployed, and taxed. Liberalism breeds financial slavery.

Americans have a very short memory if they endorse a Republican majority in Congress.

The GOP's astute leadership is what crashed the budget, crashed the economy, started two wars, spent billions on bloated military budgets and imperialistic presence at over 400 bases worldwide.

Even the iconic name of the Libertarian wing of the GOP - Ron Paul - spoke out consistently against the GOP's financial policies, and when he ran for president, he ran against the typical Republican positions...military adventurism, unnecessary wars, unwillingness to cut the Pentagon budget, massive outsourcing....

The GOP says it is fiscally responsible, but every time they get into office they spend like maniacs - WITHOUT COLLECTING THE REVENUES TO PAY FOR THEIR SPENDING. Opposing taxes, raising spending....this does NOT lead to better fiscal results.

If Americans want a change of pace - vote out everyone - GOP and Democrat - who has been in office more than 18 years. The old timers need to go out and earn a living, no pensions, no eternal care, just go back to being a regular citizen. If we take the money out of their jobs, we will attract a different group running for office.

This is not about parties - it is about people who are getting rich off PAC money and favors during long stays in Washington. Both parties. If you think a big crop of jingoistic, xenophobic, fear-mongering GOP'ers will improve things - think again.
