Does BP CEO Tony Hayward Deserve a Break After Oil Spill?

June 21, 2010 RSS Feed Print

Tony Hayward, the embattled BP CEO, canceled his appearance at a meeting of international oil executives on Tuesday, and his firm wouldn't say where he was, the New York Daily News reports. BP spokesman Jon Pack told the Daily News that Hayward was too busy with his "very heavy schedule of commitments" related to the Gulf oil spill. The explanation might come as a surprise to Americans who were outraged upon learning of Hayward's decision to go yachting in England over the weekend.

What do you think? Is Hayward tone-deaf to the severity of the oil spill disaster and those affected by it? Or does he deserve a little respite? Take our poll and post your thoughts below.

Criminal negligence ought to put the entire BP board behind bars. Call that a break if you like.

I understand the need for respite at a time like this, but going yachting in England is a slap in the face to the families whose business and life is being ruined by this disaster. A low-key break to take a walk in the woods to clear his head would be more reasonable. We've been giving way too many breaks to corporations for a LONG time. This is the time to reverse this trend.

Hayward and his stockholders need to step up & do the right thing. They need to cough up the money to stop this leak, repair the damage and compensate people who have lost their way of living. I know it will be a huge loss in their profits, but it's the responsible thing to do to clean up your mess. Getting rich at the sake of others' suffering is wrong!

Everyone needs a day off. the Commander in cheif has been absent most the time. Hayward needs to clear his head for a day so he can come back refreshed. what do they expect him to do everyday anyways. He doesn't work on oil rigs. he doesn't run clean up equipment etc. What difference did one day away make? The world doesn't stop every time obama goes on vacation, plays golf, basketball, or throws a party. Whay can't Hayward take a a one day break.
