Should Rep. Charles Rangel Step Down as Ways and Means Chair for Good?

In response to a House Ethics Committee investigation concerning a number of alleged indiscretions--including the failure to pay taxes on a vacation home and the use of private company donations for trips to the Caribbean--New York Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel announced today that he would temporarily step down from his position as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. He says that by taking a leave of absence until the Ethics Committee finishes its probe, members of Congress will be able to focus on more important matters. Fox News reports that many in Congress, both Democrats and Republicans, are pushing for a permanent resignation as a way for Congress to restore public trust in its members.
