Green Jobs Are Putting America to Work

I hope that you are right about all the new Green jobs. After spending the last few years unsuccessfully trying to get people and businesses loans, I have decided to get my LEED Green Associate and BPI Energy Consultant certifications. I live in New York and hoping to get a job with the Green NY program as an energy saving consultant.

I would like a government job in the $200K range where I can sit around and envision a bunch of really cool green things. (Like 50's and 100's) Would this qualify as a green job?

I just read a report by Policy Matters Ohio, entitled, "The Impact of IMPACT: Creating Jobs in Ohio" on clean energy markets. The report examines the impact of the proposed federal program, the ‘Investment in Manufacturing Progress and Clean Technology Act of 2009,’ (IMPACT), which would create revolving loan funds for small- and medium-sized manufacturing firms investing in energy efficiency or retooling to make products for new energy markets.

Green has a place for growth but not enough to be a quantum leap.

When we buy oil and ship it from the gulf to S. F. Bay area , we create more pollution with unregulated shipping then the vehicles do on the road, on a year to year basis.

If green jobs are so good for the economy, why do taxpayers have to heavily subsidize them? There should be NO subsidies for anyone...none! Let the market decide which energy sources are best for our economy.

!. Nuclear is about as green as it gets. Start building plants now! Find a nice deep cave. Maybe the same place where we used to test nuclear bombs under ground - can't do much harm there!

2. Wind farms and solar produce very little energy for the land (ecosystem) consumed by them. Windmills are nothing more than giant, whirling scarecrows, and as such, cause animals to flee the area.

3. Increase off shore drilling. Studies prove that drilling offshore actually reduces the amount of "natural seepage" from undersea fissures. Aprox. 1700 barrels of oil seeps from the seabed of North America daily - which is 150 times the amount lost through extraction and transport. Furthermore, if off shore drilling is curtailed then the amount of natural seepage would more than double! In the last 25 years less than 0.001% of oil extracted in U.S. Waters has been spilled. (Source, National Academy of Science, U.C. Santa Barbara and U.S. Dept. of Interior.)

4. Build (don't tear down) hydroelectric dams. They are a great source of renewable energy. If you're worried about "native fishies" than hire a limo driver to transport them above the damn so they can spawn there - or maybe build them a spawning ground somewhere else. They go back to where they were born - so give them a new homeland below the damn.

5. Get the enviro-regs out of the way of clean coal and shale oil.

6. Put a cork in Obama's and Gore's mouth - that should help with global warming.

What a joke. I am in California and the economy is comatose. The state is bankrupt and this joker wants to borrow money to invest in so called green jobs that are just make work for unions. California and Michigan where 20% unemployment reigns. Your fantasy land view has wasted so much money on so few jobs. The sad part is that progressives think government is the solution, so they go about creating problems for the normal person and then claim that we need the government solution, when they caused the problem all along.

The private sector is the only hope

Tyler makes some good points.

But I'm not sure how much of the green energy work will be kept at home. Just as we buy a lot of oil from foreign sources, we are also buying a lot of green energy equipment from overseas.

Out of the $ 2 billion from the stimulus package to build wind farms, 1.6 billion is going to China. We need to keep those jobs in the US.

Re: Bob's previous paragraphs:

1. Not necessarily, Bob. The revenue is more evenly distributed to our CITIZENS at home, instead of going strictly to oil companies or being shipped overseas to petro-dictators.

2. True, we are still a ways from that point. But never underestimate the ingenuity of the American people. If we can put a man on the man, we can have renewables reach grid parity.

3. And finally, until economies of scale are reached, it cannot be on par with fossil fuels. The beauty of economics in action!
