Social media has been used progressively more and more over the years. "One in every nine people on earth is on Facebook." This number is calculated by dividing the world's total population of 6.94 billion people by Facebook's 750 million users. This is only the statistics for Facebook! No wonder social media is being increasingly used for political campaigns. Not only is it much cheaper than an ad on television, but it is also viewed more by way of "sharing." Therefore, social media is a very effective tool in politics. However, just because a candidate has a strong social media following does not mean he will be as popular in a voting booth. Ron Paul is a good example of this. He is very popular in social media, but both times he ran for President, he failed to get enough votes.

The expansion of media in the politic campaign system has changed the scope of political elections to skew those with more money. If a person could not afford commercials or internet ads or televised fundraiser, they find themselves with a serious disadvantage in the election. This discourages average, middle-class people to run in elections because of not being able to advertise. Although social networks and email play critical roles in terms of opening communication with constituents and voters to rally more support at an afford rate.
