Would Repeal of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Mean Equality for Gay Soldiers?

February 2, 2010 RSS Feed Print

President Obama's top military officials, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Michael Mullen, will announce before the Senate Armed Services Committee today that they will begin to scale back the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in all branches of the military. Officials, according to the Washington Post, have said that it may take years for gay soldiers to fully integrate into the armed services, but that the administration will put together a group to help the process move forward. Ending the decades-old policy has been one of the Obama administration's promises, yet many doubt that the government will be able to effectively ensure that homosexual servicemembers will be treated equally among troops.

What do you think? What will repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" mean for gay soldiers? Take our poll and post your thoughts below.

Who cares if you're lying in the mud?

The military is about discipline and morale. You cannot have a cohesive fighting unit but lack discipline and morale.

Here's the problem:

Your a 1st Lieutenant and your unit is pinned down by a machine gun. The longer you do nothing, the more your guys die. You order Sgt Brown to send someone to take out the machine gun. Sgt Brown orders Pvt Jones to do the task. Pvt Jones knows that his chance of survival is nil. Pvt Jones, know that Sgt Brown has a romantic interest in Pvt Williams. Pvt Jones knows its Pvt Williams turn to take a risk. Pvt Jones balks and alleges that Sgt Brown is trying to "save" Pvt Williams because of his relationship with Pvt Williams.

Knowing this, what is your call, Lieutenant? The longer you deliberate the more people die. You don't have time to contact your Commanding Officer for guidance. Every man in the platoon is watching your everymove.

Do you support Sgt Brown's decision and disrupt morale? You know that every man in the platoon already thinks/believes that Sgt Brown is blatently favoring Pvt Williams. Do you over-ride Sgt Brown's decision and send his Pvt. Williams? Doing so is going to erode your chain-of-command.

What are you going to do? You don't have time to make a committee decision. The military is not a democracy where everyone votes.

It's not even an issue of freedom to love who and how they want. In fact, it's not about that at all. This dilema is why the don't ask, don't tell, while flawed, still somewhat works.

This country prides itself on diversity, but we struggle to live what we preach every day. Who cares if the person lying in the mud next to you on the battle front is gay, Jewish, black, female, or otherwise unlike yourself. We all deserve a chance to defend our country and those who we love. If we want to continue to ask gays to deny themselves the freedom of admitting freely who they love, should we continue to fight for freedom at all? Isn't this debate over just that? Freedom to be who we are?

If anything would make jihadists fight the West -America in particular ,with renewed fervor it would be the implementation of this flawed policy.Accepting that reality gays should seek other means in which to serve their country.
