Can the U.N. Summit Do Anything About Climate Change?

Will the Copenhagen conference make a difference for global warming?

December 7, 2009 RSS Feed Print

World leaders joined today at the United Nations' long-awaited summit on climate change in Copenhagen, Denmark. Despite doubts that a binding treaty will be signed, the New York Times reports that this summit marks the first time in history that so many governments, especially the biggest producers of greenhouse gases, have made firm pledges to reduce carbon emissions in their countries. The conference begins after recent allegations—based on hacked E-mails from top global warming researchers—that climate change may not be caused by human activity. In response, some conservatives, like TJS blogger Peter Roff, worry that a legislative decision on the issue could unnecessarily suck money from the American economy. Others, like the TJS blog's Bonnie Erbe, believe that global warming is a reality and that something still needs to be done. What do you think? Can the world community do anything about climate change? Take our poll and post your thoughts below.
