If the U.S. had gotten serious about new energy supplies at the time of the original 1973 oil embargo, we could have them in place by now. Or if we had gotten serious during the 1979 Iranian oil embargo. Or if voters had listened to Al Gore rather than being horrified about a 50 cent a gallon gas tax (imagine that!) to fund research on hydrogen and other fuels.

Maybe this time? If not, the next oil shock could be the last one for our country.

The seemingly best advance in energy along with solar appears to be solid oxide fuel calls (sofc). These type of systems convert the hydrogen in any type of fuel directly into electrical current. If i am not mistaken these units could , when perfected perform approx. twice as efficiently as an internal combustion engine. Also they are attempting to build them to run on a variety of fuels gasoline, diesel, ethanol, and even jp6 jet fuel. This tech is being funded by the US military to complete its program called (one fuel foreward). There is even research on units to burn coal in this fashon wich is also much more efficient and produces less CO2.

These units are being tested to run on bio-diesel and even the esters that are a byproduct of bio-diesel production. Very interesting reading, search solid oxide fuel cells.
