Should the Media Cover the Obama Birth Theories?

Is it a legitimate story, or an attempt to make Republicans look bad?

August 5, 2009 RSS Feed Print

The notion that Barack Obama was not born in the United States but in fact in Kenya (or the idea that this is a credible theory) has gained surprising traction in some quarters, especially in the GOP and in the South. But some conservatives argue that the media's interest in the "Birther" movement is biased and partisan, an effort to paint Republicans as nutty. To what extent should the media cover the "Birther" movement? Post your answer below.

The 'birthers' were around during Clinton years too. Remember all the Vince Foster stories, etc. Internet has just allowed their craziness to be brought out into the light. Trust me, militias will be making a big comeback. This is just what right-wingers do when they are out of power.

The media has been completely negligent in their coverage of questions regarding Obama's background. Birth certificate?Travel history? College transcripts? Ties to ACORN and Chicago's corrupt political system? All glossed over during the campaign.

What's wrong with expecting a candidate for the highest office in the land to prove his eligibility?

I couldn't get a passport without showing a birth certificate.

I personally believe that Obama was born in Hawaii - but what is he hiding? How can a president who campaigned on a platform of openness in government justify locking down so much of his personal history? Maybe the full birth certificate has information about his father, or his parents marital status, that would be embarassing. Maybe other records would show that he held dual citizenship (not that there's anything wrong with that), traveled on a foreign passport, or enrolled in college or qualified for a scholarship as a foreign student. Who cares?

His actions and decisions as an adult matter a lot more. His lack of respect for the voters in keeping so much hidden matter most of all. Why not release the records and put all of these questions to rest?
