Why Did Obama Invite Crowley and Gates to the White House for a Beer?

July 31, 2009 RSS Feed Print

The "beer summit" between Sergeant James Crowley and Henry Louis Gates is just "an opportunity to listen to each other," explained President Obama. "This is not a university seminar. It is not a summit. It's an attempt to have some personal interaction when an issue has become so hyped and so symbolic." Should Obama have invited Crowley and Gates to the White House for beer? Was it a waste of time? Did it help or hurt President Obama's handling of the controversy? Post your thoughts.

Officer Crowley has come out of all of this as the real hero and the only real victim. By accepting the beer invitation he became a simple pawn in Obama's desperate attempt to salvage his image from this debacle. At a minimum, Officer Crowley should have at least worn his full uniform.
