Is the Palin Crew's Fight with David Letterman a Publicity Stunt?

June 12, 2009 RSS Feed Print

David Letterman and the Palin crew have gotten into a bit of a tiff over jokes the late-night comedian made about Sarah Palin's recent trip to New York...and her daughter. David Letterman explains the controversy here (video). Is Sarah Palin right to take offense at Letterman? Or is the Palin family's umbrage, as Dan Amira suggests, nothing more than a publicity stunt? Post your thoughts.

And the worst part is that Letterman is lying through his teeth. He apologized for one joke, as if that's all he did. In fact he milked that same joke for two nights. If, as he admitted, he was told the "next day" that 14 year old Willow was with her mom in NYC, why then did he accuse her for the second time, implying that Eliot Spitzer couldn't stay away from her, eg, that she was a whore. Where is the apology for the Spitzer joke?

Letterman is a comedian... but his jokes about Palin and her family were a bit over the line.

Palin had the right to call out Letterman on his poor taste. But after saying so, Palin should act with the dignity and grace befitting her station. She should not engage in a running tit for tat with Letterman--she can only lose.

Sarah Palin was in New York raising awareness and funds in the battle against autism. Sure, take shots at her. The "slutty airline stewardess" comments were high school sophomoric and she handled these personal comments gracefully.

Her 14 year old daughter is at the game and Dave's excuse is that he meant the Alex Rodriguez sexual assault comments to be directed toward 18 year old Bristol not 14 year old Willow...... Give me a break!! What a leachorus pervert.

Matt Lauer's apologist tone was equally disgusting. Sarah Palin was principled and graceful. Matt looked like a buffone trying for a "gotcha" moment.
