Americans !! At least in CA, people should live without dryers, because they have affluent benefit of sunny days. All year around they are in the cozy fine dry weather. I still cannot understand why they are concerned about landscape of neighborhood more than environment. Saving power seems more sophisticated life to me. Woops, I am off the topic. Five things I need? In CA, health insurance, car, internet, good education!

The car makes sense. And ditto the landline phone for anyone who has experienced a sustained weather-related power outtage.

And I can understand the inclusion of AC and TV; sweat and boredom being responsible for much criminal activity in my city of Dallas TX.

But I don't get this one...So most Americans would "need" a clothes dryer before they'd "need" a washing machine? That seems strange, seeing that my mother used a clothesline for years - she was apparently an environmentalist before it became the fashion.

I loved the smell of those sun-dried clothes - now we buy softener sheets to artifically induce a "spring-like" bouquet to our bedding. In fact I think my HOA forbids me to use a clothesline lest I damage the property values of my neighborhood.

Gosh we're so much smarter than our Parents...

Forget the car, forget the air conditioning - I've gone without both. It's easy to adapt to. Give me health insurance, food, water and a good education which includes access to a computer (to heck with the TV). Those are the five things I cannot truly live without.

i think this is deffinently right becuase i could never live without a car.

I'm a bit surprised at the landline phone percentage. (given the prevalence of cell phones.) I haven't had a land line for around 5 years now, and can honestly say my life is the better for it.

And disappointed that TV made the list ahead of indoor plumbing.
