The DREAM Act should be taken seriously. We are talking about generations of kids brought here not on their own account. I'm one of those kids. This school year coming up I will be going through my Senior year of high school and I'm pretty scared about what I'm going to do after. My grades are the best, I have good morale, good values and don't blame my parents for trying to give me a better life. It is only fair to give students like me a chance to go on to study at College-level. My only interest here is to be able to continue my education; becoming a legal US resident is just a plus. Before we go on and judge, we need to consider the real problem at our hands. Many of us students aren't 'criminals, we just simply want a chance.

It's refreshing to see scholars, whose work is based on years of longitudinal research, offering these concrete, workable solutions. Now, the challenge will be to see if the administration has the wisdom to embrace them.

Ymerej of SC says...."If our current system of becoming a citizen is flawed then how come it's only the hispanic population that finds it unrealistic?"

Its mot only the hispanics. People for many other countries and areas of the world (asian, europern, african, etc.) suffer from our immigration policy. I think its unfair to say that only hispanics find it unrealistic. Now, there may be a larger percentage of hispanics, but look at our proximity to hispanic countries.

We seem to spend a lot of time discussing how to deal with the many illegal immigrants that are here, including the proposed DREAM legislation. While the DREAM proposal sounds good, it seems our real priority is to stop illegal immigration. Once we've done that, THEN let's deal with the illegals that already got into the country.

Even the discussion that does exist about stopping the influx of illegal immigration centers on border control. That's not the answer. The current system we have actually subsidizes illegal immigration with free medical care, free benefits to the child who was born here, etc. As long as these subsidies are in place, the best fence in the world won't stop it. Our Mexican neighbors are smart and, like anyone else, will find a way in as long as they see it as beneficial.

If our current system of becoming a citizen is flawed then how come it's only the hispanic population that finds it unrealistic? How many generations of immagrants came to this country under the current system and flourished under it. My only problem is that if every other race, nation, ethnicity can do it legally, why is it too hard for the hispanics? Anybody able to answer that?

The DREAM Act is targeted at a very specific group. It gives a path (which they don't have in our current system) for kids that were brought here before they were old enought to decide or know about laws, were raised and educated in the US, pursue higher education or join the military after high school and otherwise abide by our laws. If they stray from the path that the DREAM Act sets for them - they are deported. Thus if they are criminals we can better deal with them. We would know who they are and where they are. If they themselves play by the rules (unlike the parents that brought them here) they would be allowed to stay - being raised and educated here, to them this is their home. If they or their parents leave the US they cannot return for 10 years. This is a good, common sense and humanitarian legislation that needs to be passed.

we would do well to spend some serious money on free birth control tools for all of America's underclass, especially the immigrants. FREE VASECTOMIES, conventional pills, morning after pills, condoms (of course) and as much abstinence as ads and counseling can buy. Did I mention FREE VASECTOMIES?

The immigrant segment of this is uphill, of course, since so many have Catholic Church roots and are taught against birth control.

I'm not trying to be mean here, but with legislation or no legislation, we are hatching too many little ones---with not enough talk about how to slow that down.
