Should Michael Phelps Have Apologized for Using Pot?

On the other hand, people spend so much time talking about Phelps and his marijuana wrong-doing, but what about our president. He talks so much about his cocaine usage, and people pretend to just throw it to the side, but when Phelps enters, he’s our main target.

I do believe Michael Phelps shouldn't apologize for smoking pot due to the fact that he works his behind off ten months a year. He deserves a break. The man has obviously made a success of himself despite using marijuana, as thousands before him. I truly understand that smoking pot isn't role model like, but America needs to stop expecting its role models to be picture perfect, because no one is. It was just a simple mistake. Sightly. I like Phelps. If he truly wants to be a role model, he can take his comments and platform to the next level. However, several other celebrities have used marijuana and haven't actually apologized for it. So why is it such a huge conflict with Mr.Phelps and what he decides to do? Overall, he shouldn't apologize to the media, to fans, or anybody. He can do what he pleases at any given time, and I believe that what he does, or the choices he makes has nothing to do with us. Sure it may impact on alot of people, but he is who he is.

We all, as adults and as Americans should be free to make our own decisions about how we live our lives. It is no ones business but our own. South Carolina authorities need to back off and go fight "real" crime. It's about time we start standing up to so called authorites and start living free.

after all the edge of the seat joy Phelps brought us, and for me tears of joy, let's not judge or crucify him. He is only 23 and solely dedicated to his sport. Cut him some slack and see what the next 2 or 4 years bring!!

Indeed he should apologize. Shrugging at people using pot is one reason we have a drug problem in the United States. If we did not condone it on some level("young people will experiment") we could go a long way to drying up the trafficking. Other then making weed legal, we cannot hope to stop the crime associated with its sale by excusing it--no matter what the users age, celebrity or athletic standing.

The fact that all recognized that it was a bong leads me to believe that we are not all inocent. If this is the worst from michael he can be my 3 kids hero any day. Get real people, it's a bong not a bomb.

It seems Phelps is the exception to the conservatives harping on how bad pot is--could anyone of them smoke pot and still set world records?

Obviously, pot isn't a bad thing, since Phelps is not the typical, stereotype that neo fascists would have us believe!

Everyone has clay feet and will continue to bleed when cut because we are human. If Michael Phelps has learned from this error in judgment, let that be the end of it. And to those who say he is a HERO to younger swimmers, remember "Your children are not dead yet." Teach your children that the everyday people in their lives should be their HEROES--the person who takes you to practice, the person(s) who pay for the food you consume, your activities; the firemen who save people from fires; police officers, clergy, teachers, etc. It is not good to worship any "star." God and the good works of others in your life....those are your stars.

Michael, if President Obama could overcome his drug use and attain the position he has today, follow his example. Keep up the good work! Don't let yourself or your parents down.
