What Do You Think About Roland Burris Joining the Senate?

January 13, 2009 RSS Feed Print

Yesterday, Senate leaders Harry Reid and Dick Durbin recanted earlier opposition and agreed to seat Roland Burris with this joint statement: "The Secretary of the Senate has determined that the new credentials presented today on behalf of Mr. Burris now satisfy Senate Rules and validate his appointment to the vacant Illinois Senate seat." Reid and other Democrats, including Barack Obama at one point, had opposed the acceptance of Burris, appointed to Obama's vacant Senate seat by scandal-ridden Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich. What do you think about soon-to-be Sen. Roland Burris, Democrat from Illinois? To what extent, if any, could Burris's voice in Congress hurt the Democrats or help the GOP? Post your thoughts.

A friend of mine said it best. "Roland Burris is a steak served up on a trash can lid". The guy is credentialed and clean, his association via appointment is dirty. Regardless of all that Blagojevich is still governor, was legally able to appoint him and Burris wanted the job.

Now that he is the senate designate he just need to go and do his job.

I've never had a problem with Roland Burris. At all the SIUC Black Alumni Group reunions, campus activities, etc where we have both found ourselves in attendance, both he and Ms Berlean are cool, plain ol' good people. This particular little pot-hole-ridden trip, however, has me wondering, again--as I said in a previous post--what's he thinking with? I mean, really, legalities aside, if I were coming into the US Senate, do I REALLY want the radioactive waste of Rod Blagojevich stuck to me? Do I really want to be the butt of jokes related to that bad-haired doofus in my state capital? It'll be interesting to watch. Obviously, being in politics as long as he has, he knows something I don't, has developed a far thicker skin than me, and maybe he thinks he can handle it.

Here's hoping he can. Good luck, Mr B.

Whatever you think of Burris personally, whatever you think of Blagojevich personally, a legally elected governor appointed the candidate of his choice in accordance with the laws of his state. Either you believe in the rule of law, or you do not.

Burris will stand or fall on his own merits when he comes up for election. Meantime the Democrats should can their hissy fit, & the neocons should go back to their caves. Let the constitution & the laws operate. If you don't like the way the law of your state or your nation works, go live somewhere else.
