Some conservatives thought... But conservatives liked to pretend...conservative apparently could only look as far back as...

But the spotlights on the Libbies now - nearly a trillion in a few days, we will get to see how that all works...

Some conservatives thought that the markets were the answers to everything, except that they forgot the 30's, and the 1890's and the 1870's and the tulib bulb craze, and the east india company bust.

Some conservatives thought we needed torture and to suspend civil rights to fight terrorists, except they forgot that the founding fathers declared those civil rights and this form of government directly after a war against a King who didn't need to answer to any congressmen or any judges, and they chose to make the President answer to other people. But conservatives liked to pretend they were the first ones ever to face enemies who had different values than others. When it comes to how to act with prisoners and SUSPECTED terrorists, conservative apparently could only look as far back as the secret police of the USSR and the governmental stylings of Saddam Hussein (just like George Bush, Saddam didn't have to mess around with answering questions from any congress or letting any judges over ride what he wanted to do).

My concern about "Historical Amnesia" is about those historians & biographers, present & future that will write revisionist hstory of the third worst president Bush II. We know he will create his own "liegacy" but will others, w/ equal cowardice suffer the same Historical Amnesia about Bush II?

a thoughtful piece. it is one of the few i have seen in the popular press concerning the post- cold war failures of all administrations to guide the west "victory". when discussing the bushie failures little is ever made of u.s./russian/chinese policies. and the installment of capitalism/facism in both countries instead of democratic principals is little discussed, in spite of the historic irony involved.

with the increasing growth of terror threats the u.s. has failed to counter the arguments of radicals with an education campaign of it's own. where is the modern R F E? also the u.s. has failed to make clear to terrorist and the Muslum street what an nuke, bio, chem attack would mean to them. they count on an uneven response as a means of survival. but with a public angered by a masive attack a massive response may be demanded on the offending state no matter how innocent. do you think G W B saw munich 1938 when russia invaded georgia?

also with the u.s. deep in debt we are less able to defend ourselves or project power. thus less able to force resolutions from a position of weekness and be a player on the world sage.

Opec certainly has knocked the socks off of the groggy west, but that is no real reason for the Gloom and Doom of your current predictions... when and if the west can make a car that runs on electricity or some other fuel OPEC will have a pretty good heart attack and the money will return to the people who earned it...the other major problem is also economic and was caused without doubt by our marvelous banking system who are quite sure that they know more about money than the people who earn it honestly....it is the business of congress and the financial community to make mortgage terms and rates very clear and a minimum of "Small Print" to eliminate fraud and deception....our still current president,George Bush still thinks that "Regulation" is a dirty word....and at the same time conduct two wars.....cordially.... Steve...
