Your figures for private charitable donations for UK are a bit off. In order to compare the UK figure with the US figure (apples and apples instead of apples and oranges), you need to take into account legacy donations, something which is included with the U.S. figure of 1.67% (based based on a study of income tax itemizations for 7,500 U.S. households), but isn't included with the 0.73% figure you have for the U.K. If you include legacy private charitable donations with the UK figure, the number comes out to 0.9%... so the U.S. is still higher, but only 85% higher (not more than twice the amount).

It's disheartening to know that many charities will not receive as many donations during this holiday season as in years past. This is the year for people to donate to charities in place of a gift to a family or friend who insists they do not want or need a personal present. In these times, everything counts.
