Saxby Chambliss’s Victory Shows Georgia Democrats Don’t Hate Him Like the National Party Does

The fact is the US is the most generous nation on earth regarding legal immigration, admitting well over 1 million legal immigrants a year - plus many more through various visa programs. On top of this there are about 11-20 million illegal aliens, many of whom are exploited for their cheap labor by unscrupulous employers - who then shift the costs of this (health care, education, housing) onto the backs of hard working middle class taxpayers. And now just last month employers slashed 533,000 jobs, the most in 34 years. Woe to any politician who tries to peddle "guest worker" amnesty schemes during these times. Chambliss understands this.

Although I am a Libertarian, I believe that part of our economic woes today was the refusal to reform immigration laws. I think Bush's leadership on this issue was commendable. The fact of the matter is we need way more legal immigration, my guess somewhere around 400%. Why? Well more needs not only in high tech jobs, but more blue collar workers, and small business men. The fact is immigrants bring a strong work ethic with them, and create lots of small businesses! These small businesses create jobs for Americans!

The massive amnesty bill for illegal aliens negotiated by Saxby Chambliss, Ted Kennedy and others in 2007 was terribly flawed --bad politics and bad public policy. I'm pleased that, after hearing the rightful outrage from his constituents, Saxby realized he made a mistake and backed off. Now he is properly a strong opponent of "pathway" amnesty schemes. I hope he can convince President-elect Obama and Senator McCain that during this time of financial crisis with about 10 million Americans out of work, now is NOT the time for talk of another amnesty.
