From the media biography, it seems his mother & grandparents had a lot to do with his life. I can't find the reason why his father left, but the boy was not abandoned by his mother and her parents. It seems it was their work & example that sent him on his way to learn & be an activist. For a long time, schools taught nothing about melanin & thick, kinky, insulating hair, protecting people living nearer the equator. "Secondary sexual attractants," like large lips, are that way so they can more easily be seen against dark skin. Size & shape of noses vary with climate and temperature. In l947, I did art work for a university. I illustrated a chapter in a book to show how children must be taught racism. On a painted plaque with three moveable inserts, children chose from characters with three skin colors--dark for negro, middle tone for mulatto & pink for Caucasian. A professor designed family situations involving a man, woman & children in combinations. One scene had three kids in a sandbox. I never saw the published text but was told it proved children have no inborn racism. There is the song from a musical stage show about being "carefully taught." To me, Obama seems more "white than black" because of his long life with "white" relatives.
