We are a Republic with Democratic ideals,NOT a Democracy. Read the difference. The founding Fathers knew the difference and knew that a true Democracy would never work. WE ARE THE UNITED STATES, not just our representives. "WE THE PEOPLE". Do you want the "change" of having only the Representives using they're ideas? Or do you want our Representives to use OUR ideas? Obama wants the "state" to decide on issues, when it's our job to do that. Don't let them take away our most basic freedom...to decide our own fates, to pursue our own futures. We are free because WE decide! Fight for freedom, Fight for Liberty, and Fight to keep it that way. And to D Roessler of SC, The Constitution says "ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL" not just "white folks" as you put it. You don't understand the concept or you would have never said it.

This article should have been titled "Heather Higgins' Poor Understanding of the Constitution." Either by intent or lack of understanding, the author has presented a very biased, incomplete and often distorted view of our "founding fathers'" development of our current constitution. She mixes Jefferson's self-evident truths (Declaration of Independence)and Lincoln's of' by and for the people (Gettysburg Address)with the views of the "founding fathers" at the Constitutional Convention of 1787 (at which Jefferson was not even present.) Fifty-five delegates from 12 states attended that convention that created our current constitution, and only 39 of them signed it. There were many wide spread, often conflicting views expressed at the convention, and the resulting constitution was a compromise of those views and not a single philosophy as the author implies. The remarkable feature of our constitution is its ability to survive over time.

Our current constituion was not formed just to express views on human rights, but to address the critical national issue of the that time; the inability of the 13 states to function as a cohesive nation under the Articles of Confederation, which had created a very weak central government unable to keep the states functioning together. The author's view are very Jeffersonian, whose views never pervailed in this country after the early 1800s, except in the minds of those who fear their government rather than be an active participant in its process.

The author is entitled to her views, but they might be more creditable if she presented a more factual, and less emotionas basis for them.

obama (former editor of harvard law review) does not understand the constitution.

obama is a socialist/marxist.

obama isn't even a US citizen.

obama is the anti-christ (or was that W?)

The 1st amendment allows publications like US News to publish any opinion they want, regardless of merit. Even as the American people are now ready to move on to the serious tasks ahead.

Maybe if we whup this thing a bit longer, it will get back up and gallop. I posted earlier but I feel like I need to jump into the fray once more.

Two comments. First to Mr. (or Ms.) Bissell. Amendment XVI, ratified on 3 February 1913, says (in full text): "The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, FROM WHATEVER SOURCE DERIVED, without apportionment among the several states, and without regard to any census or enumeration." I added the emphasis, of course. So unless only the first ten amendments count (and the Constitution provides for amendments, so that's a tough case to argue), then you are simply wrong as a matter of plain fact.

Second, as others have stated, US News and World Report should be ashamed to publish this kind of inflammatory nonsense. What on earth were you thinking?

If the Constitution gets changed for the redistribution of wealth,Obama should cut out his retirement from the federal goverment. The second redistribution needs to be congress voting to do away with their federal retirement and joining the social security system. That would be a hugh change and wealth redistribtion, it would also help the national debt. The Constitution doesn't state that congress should get paid until they die.
