5 False Statements From the Debate

Both Barack Obama and John McCain needed fact-checking Wednesday night

October 17, 2008 RSS Feed Print

1. John McCain said ACORN "is now on the verge of maybe perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history." A Republican prosecutor said of the biggest ACORN case, "[T]his scheme was not intended to permit illegal voting."

2. McCain said Joe the Plumber (Joe Wurzelbacher) would face "much higher taxes" under Barack Obama's tax plan. Wurzelbacher later said that the business he would like to buy won't make enough to pay Obama's higher tax rates.

3. Obama incorrectly said that all of McCain's ads have been "negative." That has not been true over the entire campaign.

4. Obama said his healthcare plan will cut the average family's premiums by $2,500 a year, but experts have found this figure to be dubious.

5. McCain said Colombia is the "largest agricultural importer of our products." Canada imports the most U.S. farm products.
