Our daily look at stories and topics that are lighting up the Internets:
Palin on ABC News: Decisive but Dim
Liberal bloggers are unanimously unimpressed by Sarah Palin's interview with ABC News's Charlie Gibson last night. They say the interview illustrated a clear lack of foreign policy knowledge, demonstrated by her inability to explain the Bush Doctrine, her disturbingly Bush-like decisiveness ("Never blink, never think"), her abandonment of her faith (she said she was referencing Abraham Lincoln when she said the troops are on a task from God), and her views on global warming, The interview left liberals worried about the future. Conservative bloggers, on the other hand, criticize Gibson and say he was condescending and unprofessional and conducted the interview like an interrogation, "quizzing" Palin "as if she were a grad student." In response to the Bush Doctrine gaffe, the Weekly Standard defends Palin's answer, asserting that "there is no universally acknowledged single meaning."
Today's Washington Post: A Double GOP Smear?
A piece that appears on the front page of today's Washington Post has outraged conservative bloggers. The article contends that in a comment Sarah Palin made to an Iraq-bound brigade of soldiers, she linked the Iraq war to the September 11 terrorist attacks and to Saddam Hussein, a view previously promoted by the Bush administration that has since been rejected. Conservative bloggers say that Palin's comment clearly does not refer to Saddam Hussein, but to al Qaeda. They call the article a "distortion" and a "stupid smear" and think it's further evidence of the media's bias. Conservatives are also unhappy about the Washington Post's piece on Cindy McCain's past struggles with drug addiction.
Obama Says "No More Mr. Nice Guy"
The New York Times reports today that Barack Obama "will intensify his assault against Senator John McCain, with new television advertisements and more forceful attacks by the candidates and surrogates." Liberal bloggers say the tone of Obama's campaign is still more honest and light compared with McCain's "vile, pathologically dishonest attacks." Conservative bloggers mock the "new" approach, saying it's the fourth time Obama has vowed to "take off the gloves." They call the strategy hypocritical and think it will be hard for Obama to stoop any lower (in terms of attacking McCain) than he already has.
