I agree with the author. my husbands parents were killed by a drunk driver when he was 14 years old and he was almost killed himself, to see him suffer almost everyday with depression, and post-traumatic stress kills me. The driver was killed also, but he wasn't a young driver he was in his 40's but his family said he started illegally drinking in his teenage years at 17. if the drinking age was lowered how many more alcoholics would we create? how many more tragic accidents like my husbands will there be? because of this selfish decision of one person i will never know my in laws that i hear so many amazing stories about, his side of the family is torn and doesn't really speak to each other too much, and my children will never know their grandchildren.

I believe the drinking age should be lowered for several reasons. Firstly the low drinking ages is countries in Europe (Germany and Italy for examples) and their low problems with achoal related incidents (drunk driving, intoxication, binging of achoal, and public drunkness) suggests that with a low drinking age people do not care as much about doing something that they could do their whole life. In the U.S you cant drink or smoke or do many things until you reach a certain age. Peer pressure and curiousness makes you do these things earlier or when you do finally reach the age where its legal you take off and do it right away. I have personally asked friends from Germany what its like to be able to drink and they tell me things like," Oh its nothing," or, "its not that fun". Another reason the drinking age should be lowered to 18 is you are considered an adult then. As an adult you can be persecuted, tried, can own your own home, and you can go and fight for your country in war, but you cant sit down at a bar and drink beer??! (Tangent) I mean if your not an adult at 18 raise all other things (smoking, army, colledge, things like that) to 21 when you are actually considered to be a full adult with the ability to do things. My final reason of lowering the drinking age is that it could stop the illegal things going on with achaol realated prodcts. Evidence of this method working is in the gun control bans. Back in the 1970's and 1980's government banned the use of handguns. Within the next 5 years gun viloence had nearly tripled along with gang vilonce (the times of the mob). So if gun vilonce tripled when it was banned, achoal realated things would most likely increase if they age is increased, and there would be less problems if the age was decreased. In conclusion I think the drinking age should be lowered because in European countries there arent drinking problems and they have a very low ages (child aged), cause you can go to war but cant sit at a bar and drink, and cause if we lowered the drinking age less illegal things would be going on with acohaol.

it should be lower to 18 because a lot of people are being raised drinking alcohol , while they dine or to celebrate a holy day. im from another country and im allow to drink at the age of 18 but when i came to this country i can see that teens drink more here because its illegal, rather than when its legal.

L M F A O @ most of the comments here.... im 18 from canada and i can ensure you! having the drinking age at 21 is just bad news. i understand that this is some what biased coming from me being an 18 yr old but i believe it should be lowered across north america to 18yr of age. the drinking age in canada is 19 and there,.. atleast in waterloo Ontario, is a HUGE edm club scene. waterloo= A LOT OF CLUBBERS and the club scene is growing as well and from first hand experience so is the abuse of the drug mdma. which is going around all the clubs like crazy. and one of the biggest reasons why is because if your under the age of 19 in canada or 21 in the states (<which is absolutely ridiculous) you cannot drink so to open ur mind more to the music and just what kids are gonna do they wanna be under the influence. its what the kids want lol there is no stoping this. im 18 and i can get my liquor pretty easily if i want it. i can get mdma even easier. just a phone call away from any of this. in my opinion mdma is not bad if used wisly, but is being used exsesivly. i cant even imagine what the united states is like. but it comes down to the fact that when your 14-17 you maybe smoke weed and drink beer on occasional nights in your friends basement, and then between the ages or 18- 25 your going to take and what is axcesable to you. and if they droped the drinking age to 18 i think teens will still be doing mdma and other harder drugs but it will slow down. lowering the drinking age will give teens a choice and right now 80% of teens can get alcohol pretty easy and drugs even easier. there going to do it anyways, so would you rather have teens doing drugs in underground areas sneaking around with fake id's being arrested for all of this and getting involved with ilegal activity, or to lower the drinking age a little bit so we can stop hiding and possible become more mature while under the influence of substances. i also believe that if the drinking age was 18 ther would be muchhhh less mdma abuse in night clubs and night club environment because alcohol would then be much cheaper, easier to obtain and also legal. teenagers may do alot of bad things and u may see many teens going against the law. but the truth is. if we had a choice we'd rather not go against the law. most teenagers dont want to be arrested and charged. if given the oppertunity to either drink or do drugs. i believe most teens would lower drug consumtion and choose alcohol because ... it is the legal more healthy route, we do care about these things as teenagers. idk just my thoughts, because in ALLLL honesty.... these drinking laws are great in all... but if kids wanna party... ther not gonna sit on the couch and wait til ther 19 or 21 lol ther just gonna find away around it. 90% of teens are taking the illegal route.

the way I see it no matter what the age under and over people are still going to consume alcohol, Maybe there should be a drinking talk with parents kinda like the birds and the bees...it could be called "have a beer and you'll have to pee" I dont know you come up with a name, nonetheless people are going to get smashed unless parents or loved ones do something about it. Nothing wrong with having a little consumption but when you get drunk to the point where you cant even talk straight...well thats your life and if you want to live it in the gutter then thats your choice. If someone wants to do something about it, better get back to the drawing board, tho you might want to have a cold one first...something tells me you'll be standing in front of it for a long while coming up with some new age plan.
