Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf resigned Monday after nine years in power amid impeachment threats from Pakistan's ruling coalition. In the wake of Islamist violence that flared up after the resignation, the coalition met Tuesday to discuss Musharraf's successor and other post-Musharraf resignation issues. Here are five potential successors to the president:
1. Asif Ali Zardari—Party supporters say Zardari, slain Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's widower who now leads the Pakistan Peoples Party, would like the post.
2. Mahmood Khan Achakzai—The Pashtun leader is a committed nationalist and democrat who comes from the small southwestern Baluchistan province.
3. Aftab Shaban Mirani—A member of the Pakistan Peoples Party, he served as Sindh chief minister and federal defense minister during Bhutto's first and second terms.
4. Fehmida Mirza—She was recently elected as the first female speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan.
5. Faryal Talpur—Talpur, Zardari's sister, participated in the 2007 presidential election as a member of the Pakistan Peoples Party.
