Actually, the old school Nazis make up a small percentage of the country that was at war against subversion. They did not cajole anyone. It was the pressure of a failing economy, a deeply misguided and ignorant widow turned president, a fear of communism sweeping the US and a US backed coup to remove Allende 3 years prior in another country that made Argentina's human rights abuses 'tolerable' in the eyes of the rest of the world. They are not the only ones to blame when the world turns a blind eye and Kissinger tells them to do what they need to in order 'to eliminate any subversive threat'.

Check your history carefully and you will find an entire operation across South America that supported cross border kidnappings, torture and executions, the same that exist today in Iraq.

When I first learned about the dirty war last summer, I was shocked that such atrocities could have taken place so recently and in such a developed country. I was further shocked that we had never learned about this in school and most of many young friends ( who were not alive then) had not heard about these events. While I am ashamed of America for not better educating its citizens about the realities of government gone awry and the tragedies that result when people turn a blind eye, I deeply saddened that Argentina has yet to fully face its "dirty" history, to confront its mistakes and record them for all to see. On a recent trip to Buenos Aires, it seemed that no one even knew the memorial existed, and despite looking long and hard, I couldn't find this museum or any governmental acknowledgement of it. The scarves of the Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo are painted around the central statue, directly in front of the main government building, the Casa Rosada. I hope one day in the near future what they fight for, remembrance, will be more then just a white, descriptionless stencil under people's feet, but will be a living breathing museum and acknolwedgement in people's lives.
