Cain's version was the 9-9-9 plan. This is simply the "9" plan!

The Tea Perry is dreaming with the current bunch of spendthrifts in Congress. Senator Tom Colburn and his staff have done excellent work on publishing "Back to Black". That plan is doable, realistic and only take political courage and Presidential leadership to be implemented.

Rick Perry is the only candidate that has endorsed Tom Colburn's plan and has the conservative record that shows he has the political courage to implement "Back To Black".

2012 can't get here soon enough.

This sounds GREAT to me!

@Tony of IL, exactly who do you think the 'wealthy' are?

They're the Rockerfellers, the Clintons, the Streisands/Brolins, the Corzines, Corzines, the Kennedy's, the Obama's, the Michael Moores, the Heinz/Kerry's, and on and on and on. And they're the Congress who are in the top 1% of the richest people in this country.

If you think that they're going to raise taxes on themselves, you're a lower grade moron than I gave you credit for!

American aid to starvin people? Screw that. We've pumped trillions of dollars down that rat hole and all that we have to look forward to is years, decades and centuries of more of the same. Let the rich arabs do it for a century. Let the rich Chinese and their trillions of dollars that they've parasitized off of the US economy feed all the worlds starving. We gave at the office to the point that it's broken us.

We've broken ourselves trying to fix the worlds problems and it's now time to fix our own problems and it's CERTAINLY time to drastically cut back an increasingly intrusive and near tyrannical fedgov!

GO TEA PARTY!!!

Dean of IA 7:51PM November 17, 2011

Cut diplomatic funds to countries where people and starving, and aid to Americans who cannot afford to better themselves by going to college.... but don't revoke the tax cuts on the wealthy? Who are you working for, Tea Party?

Tony of IL 7:17PM November 17, 2011

I knew there was a reason I liked the Tea Party.

This is why I'm now a Tea Party Member, while Congress bickers over how to reduce the deficit the Tea Party has come up with a plan.

Daniel Vaughn of TX 6:58PM November 17, 2011

"...the Tea Party's own debt commission today unveiled a shocking plan to slash nearly $10 trillion over the next decade..."

Shocking? What's shocking about it? Is it shocking to try to keep the U.S. from becoming the United States of Greece?

What is it with U.S. News & World Report in the past few years? It used to be relatively objective, a kind of poor cousin to the Economist, now it's starting to seem like the go-to editorialist for Lefties. But instead of having the guts to just come out and be all the Left It Can Be, it slides editorial comments in as quietly as possible, thinking that may be people will simply accept the writing as objective journalism.

This sounds more like a real effort to get our fiscal situation under control than anyone else has made. It cuts completely useless agencies (Department of Energy) as well as agencies that have been used to subvert our culture and heritage (Department of misEducation).

The United States does not have an INCOME problem, rather a SPENDING problem. As long as "progressives" (Socialists) want to keep expanding the rolls of those dependent on the government there will never be enough "income" (TAXES) for them to spend.

Like ANY other organization in the world, from the family to the private business to charities and trusts, ALL of us must refrain from spending more than we take in. And we can't just spend what we want and then demand that someone come up with the money to pay for it.

The 16TRILLION dollar deficit bomb that Obama wants to leave us is unacceptable, unconstitutional, unsustainable, and unconscionable.

There are two types of citizen in the United States. There are MAKERS, those that work, build, save, create, and lift others up. Then there are the EATERS, those that expect to be taken care of, who demand entitlements rather than produce anything worthwhile. The EATERS love their welfare checks and yes, their crony capitalist deals with the Administration and White house, such as G.E.

We are in the early stages of a civil war here in the United States. If we somehow begin acting like adults we might avoid the coming civil unrest and politically motivated violence that will otherwise descend upon us. This appears to be what the Administration and the Democrats want, as they collectively and individually do everything they can to pour gasoline on the class warfare that they are drumming up. They are also doing everything they can to tank the economy, because when the economy is bad enough, people WELCOME a BIG GOVERNMENT solution.

We have to be smarter than we have been. We cannot continue borrowing and PRINTING fiat money without irreversibly damaging our currency, credit, and our economy.

This plan, or something similar, offers REAL HOPE and if adopted would return the U.S. to fiscal health quickly. Anything less is whistling past the graveyard.

Taylor:

Since I haven't read the actual proposal, I can't say whether or not I fully support it, but I can explain some of the thinking behind it.

Regarding the Department of Education, who do you think has a better grasp on improving the state of education in this country; a federal agency headquartered in D.C. that doesn't even have the responsibility of teaching a single class and whose leaders are thousands of miles from many school districts and are not up for election (instead hired by people who frequently don't send their kids to public schools), or state and local education departments and boards of education that are more publicly accessible and accountable? In the years since the Department of Education was created, has the state of education in this country improved or declined? Some people don't believe that simply throwing more money at the problem (which is what you do by paying for a bureaucracy that seems to define success as spending more money per pupil, regardless of whether or not that money actually makes it to the classroom) is going to solve it any better than pretending the problem doesn't exist.

As for TSA, I've seen it called A Security Theater. I don't remember all the details, but I've read reports of where TSA screeners have failed to catch "threats" that were used to test screening effectiveness (such as fake bombs in luggage or concealed weapons that weren't found, etc.) This problem could occur whether or not TSA was privatized, but who is it easier to seek redress from; a private security company that could face fines, lose its contract and face multiple lawsuits, or government employees who fall under civil service protections? Also keep in mind that the Supreme Court once decided that law enforcement cannot be held accountable for failing to protect people, do you think they would consider TSA any different? As it stands, TSA only provides the illusion of security without any proof that it actually works, and no guarantees that they can or will keep the people safe. If we later determine that TSA in general is a waste of money that accomplishes nothing, it would be far easier to end a contract than fire a bunch of federal employees.

Many of the other changes suggested in this article fall under the same vein: the federal government does not need to manage everything and is often inefficient at the things it does manage, sometimes even preventing progress by nature of their existence.

And Patrick, your hero-worship of Ron Paul is just about as unnerving as the hero-worship of Obama in the run-up to the election. He was not the first, he is not the last, and he is not perfect. He is only human. (Applies to both Paul and Obama.) Disparaging others without consideration of the merits of their views will only drive people away and reduce the chance that your voice will be heard.

Insanity is in the eye of the beholder. If you can show me what they contribute to society, I'll listen. I do see how they add anything but costs.
