New Fears EPA Smog Rule Will Cost 7.3 Million Jobs

Business argues that new EPA rules under clean air act could kill jobs.

Lawmakers today issued a new warning that an aggressive antismog plan being pushed by the Environmental Protection Agency could cost the nation $1 trillion, kill another 7.3 million jobs, or 4.3 percent of the workforce in 2020, and halt major construction of highways and factories in employment starved swaths of the nation.

At issue: The EPA's plan to go far beyond former President Bush's effort to tighten ozone standards way in advance of the planned review in 2013. It could push much of the nation into non-attainment status under the Clean Air Act, forcing major changes to improve air quality. Most business groups opposed the hurried-up regulations. The National Association of Manufacturers has drawn up a scary map that shows only parts of the central North, the top of Maine and a few other sections of the country that will be in compliance of the new ruling.

Environmental groups, however, cheer the changes, claiming it will make the air much more healthy.

Today at the weekly Senate GOP Caucus, Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming led the opposition. "People in Wyoming are also concerned about jobs, the economy. And this week the Environmental Protection Agency is going to come out with new rules and regulations on ozone, which have been called the most expensive environmental regulations in the history of the United States. They didn't need to do this until 2013, but unilaterally, and I believe dangerously, they're coming out with this," he said.

"And even the Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce has said this will cost about 330,000 jobs in Pennsylvania. I think that the — that the focus around the country is on jobs and the economy, and this administration ought to take this 9.2 percent unemployment a lot more seriously than they are taking it right now."

He also handed out a summation of many of business' warnings:

In 2008, the Bush administration tightened ozone standards in the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) from 84 ppb to 75 ppb (parts per billion).

• Although the next ozone standard review isn't due until 2013, the EPA is moving forward with another rule to drastically lower the ozone standards.

• The Business Roundtable has called this new rule the "single most expensive environmental regulation ever imposed on the U.S. economy."

• If communities aren't able to meet these new standards, the EPA will have the ability to intervene and block any new construction, including new highways or factory expansions, if those activities contribute to ozone pollution.

• This will crush local investment, economic expansion and jobs.

Economic Impact:

• It would "push 565 new U.S. counties into non-attainment status under the Clean Air Act." – National Mining Association.

• "Non-attainment status has a chilling effect on any new economic activity in a designated area." – Midwest Power Coalition.

• The President's new ozone regulation "could cost nearly $1 Trillion over ten years." – Business Roundtable.

• "Total U.S. job losses because of the new standard are estimated to rise to 7.3 million by 2020." – Manufacturers Alliance.

• "Pennsylvania businesses and individuals could incur control costs of up to $3.2 billion and gross regional product could decline $31.4 billion by 2020. The state could also see more than 330,000 jobs lost by that same year." - Gene Barr, Vice President, Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry.

Dear Paul Bedard--

I suggest you do a bit more research before you write up your articles. In fact, the EPA had promised to put in the new rules in August of 2010 after a lawsuit was filed by groups such as the American Lung Association, which charged that the Administration was implementing weak rules that would result in thousands of deaths. It's not that they are trying to implement new rules early; instead, they are trying to right what was wronged 3 years ago, when the Bush Administration implemented rules that didn't follow the EPA recommendations.

What your business friends don't tell you is that in 2008, the EPA estimated it will save between 13 and 100 billion dollars, offsetting the 19 to 90 billion dollars Industry claimed it would cost to implement the more stringent rules. The other thing they don't tell you is that every day we let this slip by, more people are dying or getting sick from ozone pumped out by these same Industry friends of yours and the costs of implementing real reform goes up. When will we figure out that it's more cost effective and more life-saving to get this stuff done sooner rather than later?

It is plain that Environmentalism, and its cousin, "Climate Change" has evolved into Neo-Pantheism - An old religion with a new set of clothes. These new religions are particularly appealing to progressives, communists and socialists as they provide instruments of population regulation through their dogmas of "social justice", cap and trade, green jobs and draconian control of private lives and business.

For decades progressives and liberals manned the wall of separation between church and state. Ever vigilant against the threat of Christianity they threw open the gates and welcomed the Trojan Horse of Pantheism inside the walls. Slowly, they have been seduced and transformed into intolerant, religious zealots - the very thing they once feared.

Neo-Pantheism controls politicians, the media, courts, schools and the bureaucracies of government. Unfortunately, it is far too late to rid ourselves of, what has become, our "State Religion". It has swept through our states, cities and towns like a whirlwind over the past 3 decades... Its propaganda and intolerant dogma are now accepted as truth and science. Global Warming - a man caused hell - used to coerce and whip us into submissive, penitent servants of Government as the Lord Protector of Nature.

Their creed is simple;

"All forms of human endeavor are evil.

Man's only purpose is to serve the Earth and the governments that protect her.

The only permissible interaction between man and nature is restoration, conservation, preservation and veneration."

Vast areas of our nation’s oceans and shoreline are being closed - wild places ringed with gates, “Closed” signs and fences. Barriers that keep us, we the people, confined to our prisons of concrete and asphalt. Of course, exceptions are made for government officials and scientific acolytes of Gaia - they are trained in the theology of Environmentalism and know how to interact with the Nature Goddess and so are allowed inside these holy sanctuaries.

It is interesting to observe that in no other area of modern socieety would we accept the disenfranchisement of the old, the infirm, the handicapped or families with young children. But that is just what "Roadless Forests" and "Nature Preserves" are - areas that are off limits to all recreation and only the young and healthy are allowed to trek in in order to commune with Gaia.

Energy production, mining, food production, industry, even civilization itself, is considered an insult and injury to Gaia. Her High Priestesses, Browner and Jackson have taken a vow to destroy these dark works of man - no matter the cost in freedom, money or lives.

Our future reveals a sterile veneration of nature - without actually living in, or experiencing it... A dull, sullen time when gray , flaccid people worship “climate models and worry about how to mitigate their perceived sins against nature - but never daring to experience or really even understand it.

Stop the Madness - Going Green Has Gone Too Far.
