Say what you want about his politics, President Obama is solid gold among the world's autograph collectors. A rare hand written note from Obama is hitting the auction block Wednesday. The expected gavel price: $10,000. [See photos of the Obamas behind the scenes.]
What's neat about the note written on White House stationary is that it's Obama's reaction to an angry note written by an American peeved at the huge bonuses AIG executives received after their bailout. In it Obama pens: "Tim, Thanks for your letter. I share your sentiments, and we are moving as quickly as we can to restore some common sense to the financial system. Barack Obama." Here's the release we just received on the auction:
On March 15 of 2011, Hammer and Block Auctioneers' received email with an unusual consignment request from a gentleman by the name of Tim who wanted to sell a very interesting piece that you don't come across every day. He had a handwritten letter by our current President Barack Obama himself. Hammer and Block Auctioneers come across all sorts of unusual consignments, but this one for sure, is unique. We asked Tim how he obtained this unique piece of modern history, and he explained his story to us:
"I was reading the USA TODAY at work in 2009 and saw that the folks from AIG were giving their people huge bonuses with the bailout money we had just given them. That ticked me off plenty, so I quickly jotted down a letter and faxed it from my office to the White House which I titled it "TO ANYONE WITH ANY COMMON SENSE". I just wanted someone in the White House to know that at least one American annoyed about what the AIG people did. About a week later this envelope arrived at my address, I opened it and to my surprise it was a card from the President. This is a very rare letter as it is handwritten on the White House stationary. It's well documented the President reads about 10 letters a day from folks like me, and rarely will he actually reply to them so personally."
A letter similar to the one Hammer and Block Auctioneers will be auctioning was recently sold by a gentleman from Florida privately to a New York dealer for $6000 who is selling it on for $10,000. Below you will find the link that will take you to the article that speaks about this particular story.
Now Tim is auctioning his OBAMA letter through Hammer and Block Auctioneers. This letter will be for sale on March 23 of 2011, 7.30pm, at a LIVE auction held in their gallery located in Midtown Miami / Wynwood Art District at 415 NW 26st Miami, FL 33127.
You can preview this rare historic piece beginning March 22nd and 23rd from noon to 6pm. If you are interested in purchasing this piece of modern American History, these are some reasons you should keep in mind:
