Hi. In the future I'm going to keep here links to their sites. But I do not worry about the sites where my link is removed. So if you do not want to see a mountain of links, simply delete this message. After 2 weeks, I will come back and check.

I do not totally agree with the administration’s new policy that lifts the ban on media coverage of the return of remains from the war. I do not mind the lift on the ban or the media’s coverage. But I think leaving it entirely up to the family can cause some unforeseen problems. I believe the decision should be left up to the military member beforehand.

Normally military members make death and remains related decisions prior to deployment using their Record of Emergency Data DD Form 93. Soldiers, Marines, Sailors and Airmen use the DD 93 to decide Next of Kin to be notified in case of their death. As a soldier, I believe I should be able to decide one of the follow on my DD 93: I should be able annotate my choice of the media’s right to view my remains when I return or I should at the very least be able to annotate which one of my family member’s will make the decision of whether or not the media is allowed to cover my remains return home. If not annotated on the DD 93 there are many forms that the family and military assistance will be privy to that would give the soldier control over the procedures when their remains return.

Some family members do not understand or even know what the military members wishes or feelings are in regards to the media viewing his/her remains. Some families may have diverging views of whether the media should be allowed to cover their son/daughter’s remains. For example, mom and dad are divorced or separated; both were notified of their child’s death in combat. Dad served in the military and believes the media has no right to view the return of the remains. Mom did not but she wants her child’s story to be told, she wants to make sure everyone remembers what her son died for. Who makes the decision? There are many situations that could cause problems or issues as the remains arrive at Dover. If a family decides that they do not want the arrival covered but the media knows who the family members are is it possible that media representatives start offering money to view the arrival. Imagine it’s the arrival of questionable death, a famous soldier, or just something with a “story” behind it.

I believe in this situation, we, the military have to help the administration make the best policy by recommending a better way of doing things. recommend a policy that respects our fallen military member’s wishes and ultimate price they paid to their country. By allowing the military member to make the decision beforehand, you protect the family and ensure everyone involves understands the military members true wishes.

I am sure I misunderstood this comment that implied that our American Military is comprised of cowards. SSGT. Phillip Myers was a hero and dedicated his life to protecting us. Any implication that his mission, that of his brethren, and of his unit was anything less than heroic is a flat out insult issued by persons who live under the very protection that he provided. He truly exemplified the Air Force's motto of Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do. I am grateful to be shown the dignity and honor accorded the fallen in their return home.

I believe it's necessary in order for folks to understand the true cost of war....which some apparently don't wish to do. This was done with much respect, and at the aquiessence of the family's involved. It make ME ill that some folks here consider it a "parade" to show this. It's the right wing war hawks who feel that it hurts their cause to show the human cost of war. They're afraid it makes us "soft".

We need to know the true cost of war. Hiding the caskets was only a way of keeping the causalities as statistics and not true human tool. We have to acknowledge them publicly to truly honor them. Not hide them away as if they didn't exist.
