Historic Whispers: Clinton's First 100 Days Part 1
Barack Obama is trying to learn from Bill Clinton's mistakes.
Socks appeal. Here's why Socks was wearing a leash when he posed for photographs at the White House last week: The Clintons worry that if allowed to roam his new neighborhood around 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, their family cat might instinctively head for his old home in the governor's mansion in Little Rock. So, while Socks has the run of the East Wing by day and spends most nights sleeping on the floor in Chelsea's bedroom, he is kept on a short leash whenever he is permitted out on the White House grounds. In brief, unless and until he becomes acclimated to his new surroundings, Socks—the most famous cat in America—will still lead a dog's life. (March 22, 1993)
