ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The mayor of Anaheim is calling on state and federal agencies to help the city investigate the officer-involved shooting death of an unarmed man in a neighborhood a few miles from Disneyland.
Mayor Tom Tait issued a statement Monday calling on the state Attorney General's office and the U.S. Attorney's office to aid a full, independent investigation.
Over the weekend, police clashed with angry residents of the largely Hispanic, working-class neighborhood where 25-year-old Manuel Diaz was shot to death Saturday afternoon.
Tait says after Saturday's shooting, police used pepper balls to disperse a protest and a police dog was accidentally released into the crowd.
Tait says the police department also will conduct an internal investigation.
