WASHINGTON (AP) — The Air Force's top general says the decision by a military mortuary to incinerate portions of some 9/11 victims' remains and dump the residue in a landfill was in line with instructions from a top Pentagon official.
Gen. Norton Schwartz told a group of reporters Wednesday that the actions taken by the mortuary at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware appeared to have followed guidance issued in March 2002 by David Chu, who was the Pentagon personnel chief under Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
The Pentagon released a copy of the Chu memo, which was address to Thomas White, the Army's top civilian official at the time. The Army was in charge of the military's mortuary activities at Dover and elsewhere.
