MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A severely malnourished 15-year-old Wisconsin girl has accused her father and stepmother of confining her to the basement of their home for years and abusing and starving her.
Police say the girl said she ate what she could find on the floor or in the garbage and that she was even forced to eat her own feces. She says she had been forced to live in the basement since 2006.
Someone called police last week after seeing the girl walking barefoot near her Madison home. The girl told police she was allowed upstairs to clean and fled because she feared her stepmother would throw her down the stairs.
The couple were arrested Friday on suspicion of child abuse and neglect. A judge on Tuesday set their bail at $20,000 each.
