SEATTLE (AP) — Albert Pujols hit a home run in his third straight game and pinch hitter Alberto Callaspo came through with a grand slam in the sixth inning to give the Los Angeles Angels a 5-3 win over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday.
Callaspo's slam came against Mariners starter Felix Hernandez (4-4) and was the first pinch grand slam for the Angels since Shane Halter hit one against Tampa Bay in 2004.
Pujols, who now has seven homers after not hitting any in April, hit a 2-1 fastball from Hernandez over the left-center wall in the fourth inning. Pujols has homered in six of his last 11 games.
Jerome Williams (5-2) earned the victory, working six innings and allowing five hits and three runs. Jordan Walden, Scott Downs and Ernesto Frieri held the Mariners scoreless over the final three innings. Frieri picked up his second career save.
The Mariners went ahead 2-1 in the fifth on RBI singles by Mike Carp and Dustin Ackley.
In the sixth, Mark Trumbo, who had three hits, started the Angels rally with a single. Howie Kendrick also singled and Erick Aybar loaded the bases with a bunt single. Hernandez struck out Kole Calhoun but Callaspo turned on a 0-1 pitch and put it deep into the right-field seats for a 5-2 lead.
Justin Smoak hit a solo homer in the sixth, his seventh, for the Mariners' final run.
Notes: Mariners CF Franklin Gutierrez, who partially tore his right pectoral muscle during spring training, is close to being sent out on a rehab assignment. "He ran today," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "Initially, we thought we'd get him early tomorrow or the next day. We'll see where he is today." ... The Angels staff has not allowed more than three earned runs in 10 of the last 12 games. The bullpen has a 0.72 ERA over the past 12 games. ... it was a 'Turn Back the Clock" game as the Mariners assumed the identity of the 1955 Pacific Coast League champion Seattle Rainiers. The Angels also wore the PCL's 1955 L.A. Angels uniforms.
